Watch out, people… The bandwagon is here. The horrible fucking awful bandwagon that is the most overrated piece of crap ever made: Slender. The people that made that game should just kill themselves with fire.
maybe enjoy it for what it is. Good guy made this, you can hate a game but you dont have to be rude about it especially in light of how its shown or popularity or what have you. Many enjoy it.
Well, at least I can understand the bandwagon of games like that because they’re good games. Games like slender are just stupid and people hyping about a horrible game like this is even more stupid.
Wow… You guys took that more seriously than I did. Slender might be a bad game, but come on… Did you really think I wanted the creator to kill himself with fire? You guys need to loosen up a bit.
Why bother saying it then? It’s not funny, it’s just boorish. If you hate the game you could have at least chosen a much subtler and less mean spirited way to say it.
We have every right to pull you up on something if we disagree with it, albeit in a much more polite manner than the one you’ve showed. You seem to forget agressive vitriol doesn’t wash all that well on this site, whether it’s meant to be taken seriously or not, it’s inappropriate for the tone of the community.
Seriously. I mean, you can’t turn around without seeing TV commercials, billboards, ads on buses, radio ads, people mentioning it on the news, talk shows, celebrities endorsing it. It’s like everywhere you look, Slender, Slender, Slender – it’s clearly impossible to avoid.
Oh wait…it’s a free game with no budget whatsoever – literally the only way to expose yourself to it is by seeking out and watching videos of people playing the game on the internet. What an injustice this lone developer who gave away his game for free has done to you, clearly he deserves to die in the most horrible way imaginable.
Well Fraser said it was “better than he thought” but considering his expectations going in were so low I’m not sure how much that says. Sure there were a couple jump scares; but that’s all it had. There was little to no gameplay or story. It’s not really a proof of concept either, because it has already been proven that jump scares can be effective.
Basically it’s the ‘found footage’ of video games.
As far as internet popularity, well that’s what the internet does. They latch on to the dumbest things and run with it to the point where any substance it may have originally had has been driven into the ground.
Well I think it works both ways. There are plenty of people that claim this game is “the scariest thing ever” so when you hear that a lot you kind of have expectations. Not necessarily saying you believe all the hype; but you at least expect it to be something more than it is. It also tends to then get compared to other games that people think are scary, be it fair or not.
It’s not to say it’s a good or bad thing that I compare it to found footage. While I personally think that kind of thing is a bit silly, there are plenty that enjoy that genre. Just as there are people who enjoy this, or are looking forward to the more complete version.
right but you said its not proof of concept or gameplay or story, well its not meant to be any of that so yeah. Of course there is always balance people like or hate thats fine but when you rate it at those level there is no point.
Okay Frasher, I was pretty freaked out the first time I heard of Slendrman, souly because I didn’t know it was a Photoshop contest, it just freaked me out seeing it. I played this and was all like “OMFG I r s0 SUURRED!!” but I wasn’t freaked out at all, well the first time the loud buzzing was freaky but that’s all that scared me. But I do personally like the whole Slenderman creature.
Wow… This episode went a lot better than I thought it would. Becky has the best reactions that I’ve seen. Everyone did. Simply amazing!
Also, Fraser; from what I’ve been able to tell, there are several different versions of this game. What you played is the original “Slender” game. All the others are we’re made by different people. The other versions are homages to what you guys played.
Unconfirmed rumour; but, I heard that the paid version will feature all the different locations from the different Slender games.
Honestly, the polygons and terrible controls made that game a lot less scary than it could have been… in my opinion…
I wish they’d worked the rough parts out a bit more before releasing it.
So is the key to Slenderman to walk around and find all 8 pages without picking ANY of them up? Then, once you know where they all are, just speed-run for them?
The truth is Fraser is right about there being a difference in Fear and Anxiety. I always use the example of Fast and Slow Zombies.
Fast Zombies are about the fear the ‘Oh no their chasing me!’ fear
Slow Zombies are about the anxiety of that slow never stopping monster that no matter how far you run it will find you.
The difference is Dread, with Anxiety there is time for dread to build, the fear of the fear so to speak. With straight up fear like a jump scare there can be fear and anxiety but thats a lesser aspect and to me not nearly as effective.
I like this game from what I have seen, its not an amazing horror based game but it builds that atmosphere of dread and anxiety well enough that when something does happen it is generally a fright.
I think slenderman is really only scary when you can’t make him out in blurry photographs. Like you’re not sure if its just some blurry dude, a photo mistake, or an eldritch abomination. You, like the whole reason he existed in the first place. This game is basically doing it all wrong.
Slenderman is a really neat monster and i think a big reason people like it is being ‘there’ in a sense during its birth so. But i was more scared of the Loch Ness monster and such when i was little.
A tense atmosphere to put you on edge followed by throwing in a loud piano chord to scare you. It’s not the most creative work of horror, is it. Was it successful in being scary? Yes, I thought so, but it’s easy to scare people like that. As Fraser said, that’s just human nature. Tickling people will make them laugh, it doesn’t mean you’re a genius in comedy.
As for this new 21st century addition to urban myths and monsters, “Slenderman”… It’s a human figure dressed in suit. Or in this game, a stationary blow-up doll in a suit. Does that image really induce fear? Apparently for Becky it does. I just can’t get my head around it though.
I think of this game as more of a “Haunted House Simulator”.
Most haunted houses have these same kind of jumpscares, gimmicks and tense atmospheric cliches that easily scare people. And many haunted houses don’t even have extremely detailed costumes or props or stories, since they rely mostly on the darkness and the jumpscares, so that could be compared to this game’s unpolished graphics and virtually nonexistent plot.
So while Slender might not be a great “game” per se, but it’s definitely an effective Haunted House Simulator.
I’ve seen on other people’s videos that Slender man is attracted to the flashlight, so it might be a good idea to turn off the flashlight sometimes. I know I don’t actually have the guts to play the game.
I my self have never heard about this until Twitches streamed and played it with his friends. I can say that I personally had the everything scared out of me. But thats just me?
Why is everyone so intent on hating this? Some people like it some dont thats it. It seems that people are prone to hate on things like this because its popular and no other reason.
Yea it’s pretty much that. People hate it because it got so crazy popular.
I personally don’t like it because I don’t like jump scares. They do nothing but annoy me.
Wow… Uhm… people need to relax… It’s a one man jobb and it’s been out for 6 months…
I would like to say it’s a “good” game.. but it misses sooo much and the only reason to play it would be to get scared… Why play a LOW BUDGET game… just to be scared… there are tons of HIGH BUDGET games that could do that just as easily…
I mean… Fraser and the gang screamed just as much over this game as Amnesia..
So… I would say.. This game is ok… not my type of game.. but not every game could be…
oh.. Let me also add… those people that believe the Slender man exist…. Need to have their brain checked…. The person who created the game has said himself it’s just a photoshoped picture like Fraser said in the start of the show…
Have you seen the trailer for the sequel yet? It looks way better, mostly due to the fact that it seems like you can actually attack things and doesn’t look like it was made with the budget of a half a ham sandwich and a toothpick.
