Hi It’s Whatimmadeof, For anyone who seen the G4 ” the top 100 video games all time” I was….pretty disappointed by it, I was glad that Kingdom Hearts made it, but it was #55…. I was VERY disappointed that Team Fortress 2 did not make the list…. :c There were some games that I was glad made it like, super Mario kart, Bioshock, etc. But take a guess which game is #1. Just take a guess…..Its Super Mario Bros. Pretty obvious right? Well tell me some of your thoughts about this.
Thank you, Whatimmadeof.
June 16, 2012 at 3:25 pm #37743Super Mario Bros. Is DEFINITELY NOT the greatest game of all time. Now I haven’t played many games but I’d expect something from the era of these: Deus Ex, Quake, Half-life, Banjo Kazooie/Mario 64 at #1. (Yea I know they’re almost all FPS but I can’t think of lists that well) If they were going for gameplay it should’ve been 1 of those kinda games or Portal, ya know? Something with great gameplay and immersive story.
They were probably all high on NostalgiaJune 16, 2012 at 4:47 pm #37753I think making a huge list like that while trying to satisfy everyone(or anyone for that matter) is silly and impossible.
Still being upset by anything G4 says by now is also sily.

Yea G4 is starting to turn into IGN
June 16, 2012 at 4:59 pm #37756I raged so much, that night i saw it i just turned off the tv. It was completely idiotic that they made Super Mario Bros. number 1. It’s just so they can get love from all the retro fans by saying “The one that started it all is number 1″, Its all Bull. Super mario bros. was great for the time but if you’re making a list that comprises of ALL games that were ever made until now (Like they were), i could think of other games that i would rather play. If i was limited to retro i would rather play Ghouls’n Ghosts before i would play Super Mario. I would play Luigi’s Mansion before i played Super Mario Bros. WHERE THE HELL WAS SUPER MARIO WORLD! Super Mario World was the best of all the Mario games. It’s even still popular to this day! People still make hacks and YouTube videos of it. Do you see popularity of the original Super Mario anywhere? This list was probably made by 1 person who works for G4 and is a total reflection of His/Her top 100.
It’s all a load of bollocks and i have now locked G4 in the same dark closet in my mind that IGN and SpikeTV goes in. NO FOOD OR WATER FOR THEM!
But you’re right, its silly to be mad at IGN…..i mean G4.. Tbh i was going to make a thread on here as soon as i saw it but then i just sort of let it go…..seeing this thread brought it allll back to me -_-

June 16, 2012 at 6:08 pm #37770It doesn’t surprise me that G4 doesn’t know what it’s talking about. That being said, I’ve seen lots of publications try and do these ‘greatest’ lists, and often put something like Zelda or Mario at the top. What people don’t seem to understand is that just because a game is influential does not mean it is the ‘greatest’. I think most people would even say that Super Mario Bros isn’t even the best Mario game on the NES, let alone best Mario game, LET ALONE best game of all time. I also don’t think Kingdom Hearts should be on the list either, or if it is, it should be at the very bottom. As far as RPGs go, it did nothing that made it stand out. Yes it has a huge and dedicated fanbase; but it’s not about what is the most popular, it’s what exemplifies the best qualities of a video game. Really though, these kinds of things are silly, because there is no consensus, and there never will be one.
June 17, 2012 at 1:13 am #37795I’m with Ibun. You may as well make a top 10 list of the best colors. It is all a matter of opinion.
June 17, 2012 at 6:07 am #37811IMO there cant be another game on the top of these list if you think about it. We dont need to talk about what the best or greatest video games of all time are, because as many people already said its all a matter of personal taste and opinion. But what isnt a matter of personal taste and opinion is the simple fact that without Donkey Kong who restarted peoples interest, and the NES (which included SUPER MARIO BROS) which finally “cemented” video games as a established form of entertainment at home, there wouldnt be gaming as we know it today.
Since they cant put the NES on their games list, its just the next step to put the most famous NES game there. So yeah as I see it, their list sucked bad I give you that, but the No. 1 spot does not have anything to do with nostalgia, but with logic. There is nothing else that would fit at No. 1 except Mario because without him no one would be making stupid lists like this.
June 17, 2012 at 8:46 am #37823wait wait wait hold on a second……G4 has programming about video games
June 17, 2012 at 10:25 am #37840Maybe we should make a top 100 list of our own and scrutinize the hell out of it.

But see, your entire argument is based on the fact that Mario popularized video gaming. That he is an iconic figure, even being well known to people who might not be gamers. Did the NES resuscitate the video game industry after the crash of 1983? Yes. Was Super Mario Bros. a big part of that success? Absolutely. Does that automatically make it better than every game that came before, and has come after it? No.
June 18, 2012 at 5:21 am #38002I didn’t even watch the thing but from I’ve heard, most of their judges and commentators on this thing were random celebrities and so called “gaming Journalists” like Morgan Webb. It’s funny really.
If the list was about the most influential games of all time then I can see why Super Mario Bros is at the top, but then throwing in games like Bioshock at 3 yet leaving games like Super Metroid out of the top 20 wouldn’t make sense either so yea….. Terrible list.Oh and Morgan Webb is the person that complained that Mario Galaxy 2 was too “kiddy” and that it needed to be “more 3D”.
June 18, 2012 at 7:42 am #38010Wait Bioshock is at #3? I’ve just started playing it (well almost beaten it by now) and hell no. I’ve really liked it; but saying that there are only 2 games in history better than it? Yikes. Now that I’ve actually seen the list, I can make even more comments about how silly it is!
Pong (#100) Again, historically significant; but it’s not a great game. It’s just ping pong.
Words with Friends (#99) Virtual Scrabble, I’m sure it’s fun by c’mon really?
NBA 2K11 (#97) There are very few sports games that should be on this list, this is not one of them.
Wii Sports (#84) I don’t care how good it is, a tech demo should never be on a top 100 list.
Fallout 3 (#75) Well some of you already know how much I loathe this game, so obviously I don’t think it should be here.
Mega Man 2 (#73) Should be a bit higher on this list, in my opinion. (But then again, is that true, or is it because I am a Mega Man kid?)
NBA Jam (#64) This is one of those instances where a sports game fits, and I think mid 60s is about right for it.
God of War 3 (#61), I’m sorry but nothing about a game where you go around dismembering and disemboweling all manner of creatures gives off the vibe of ‘classic’ to me.
Pokemon Red/Blue (#57), I love these games; but I’m sorry, there is no question that they have aged poorly. Even with that aside, their successor, Gold/Silver, vastly improved upon many aspects of the originals, making them better games.
Angry Birds (#49) A cultural phenomenon for sure; but placing an app game in the top 50 doesn’t sit well with me.
Tecmo Bowl (#48) Personally, I would argue that Tecmo Super Bowl is the better game, as it has all 28 teams, as well as a full season and playoffs. On top of that it was the first game I knew of that actively kept track of stats and injuries. (Though only offensive players could get hurt.) Either way, I think 48 is a good spot for both games.
Red Dead Redemption (#46) A lush world, amazing atmosphere, lovable characters and storyline. A sandbox game that is actually fun to play for once. And yet only #46 on this list?
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater (#39) I wonder if they actually went back and played these games before making this list? I grew up loving the THPS series, and the first installment is, to put it nicely, rough around the edges. Most notably is the lack of create-a-skater in the THPS1.
Super Metroid (#38) While I am not a huge fan of it, I can at least appreciate the fact that, as far as adventure/platforming games go, it is the best, if not one of the best.
Final Fantasy 7 (#33) Now I am wondering if this whole list is meant for pandering; but then I guess FF7 would be higher if that was the case. Popular does not always mean good, G4. If we’re going to be putting a Final Fantasy on this list, I would reluctantly say it has to be 6; but even then I would put it towards the bottom.
Skyrim (#31) Yes, because when I think of the greatest games of all time, I think of a game that only works on two of the three systems it was released for. Sure, lots of titles have game-breaking glitches; but you usually have to go out of your way to find them. In Skyrim, it was as if stepping on the wrong piece of land would crash your game.
Chrono Trigger (#27) Criminally low on this list. Perhaps the quintessential RPG. Honestly, if someone asked me what game they should play if they were trying to get into this genre, I would tell them this. One of the best stories you can get. Fantastic music, graphics, characters and gameplay. And holy shit MULTIPLE ENDINGS. Yes that’s right, an RPG with replay value. How this is not in the top ten is beyond me.
Madden 2005 (#24) All jokes aside about how every Madden game is the same, there is no arguing that they are similar enough that it makes no sense at all to pick one over the other. Certainly not this high on the list either.
Halo 3 (#23) I’ve never played a Halo game before; so I would ask fans (the rational ones) do you think that both Halo and Halo 3 should be on this list or in the top 50?
Panzer Dragoon Saga (#22) I honestly had never heard of this game before. With good reason since apparently English copies of the game are very limited and rare. Makes me wonder why they put it on this list. It could be the 22nd best game of all time; but do you think many people in their audience have even heard of it? It is very out of place in terms of the way they are judging things
Diablo II (#19) I am having a hard time accepting this. And this is coming from someone who loves the Diablo franchise. I poured hours upon hours into Diablo II; and yes it is probably the best of the 3 games. I would put it on the list for sure; but probably not this high.
Starcraft (#17) Nope. That is all.
Uncharted 2 (#14) I think if it weren’t for the linear gameplay, this game would and should be higher. Aside from that, it does a masterful job of telling a story. Fraser nailed it when he said the music was “John Williams good” and the movie-like feel of the entire game. This is a game where the voice acting didn’t hinder, didn’t just go along with, it enhanced the gameplay experience.
Portal (#13) Remember what I said way back about Wii Sports? This is the game I was referring to. I, personally, don’t like Portal at all, just because it makes me all disoriented; but I acknowledge not only how groundbreaking it is; but how good of a game it is. That being said, Portal 2 far surpasses what Portal did. With a more fleshed out story, more levels, and a bigger variety of puzzles to solve, it should be #13 on this list.
World of Warcraft (#10) As someone who spent more than 4 years grinding, raiding, PVPing, and doing almost everything you could in this game, no, just…no. Leaving aside the fact that this game bent Warcraft lore over its knee and spanked it raw, it is a game that consists of doing menial tasks. Kill 10 of these animals. Get me 5 of this item. It’s mostly busywork. In all my time playing, the most satisfying moment I had was way back in the vanilla days, doing the Dreadsteed quest for my warlock.
Super Mario Bros 3 (#7) If we’re putting a Mario game at the top of the list, it should be this. (Though some might argue Super Mario World.) More levels, more powerups, more enemies, just more of everything. The same classic platforming, with more meat to the game. In what way does that not make it better?
Tetris (#5) I think Tetris absolutely has a place on this list, I might even argue in the top 50; but not the top 5. It is an enduring puzzle game that has enjoyed success in multiple decades. Simple and responsive controls are what make this game as good as it is.
Asteroids (#4) I think they just put this game here to make this list seem more ‘legit’. I can’t really think of another reason why they would put it at number 4.
Bioshock (#3) See above. Good game, I love the story and the characters; but not the third best game of all time.
Link to the Past (#2) This is more of a group post that also includes Legend of Zelda (#6) and Ocarina of Time (#11). It reminds me of Rolling Stone Magazine’s 500 best albums of all time. I think 3 or the top 5, and 5 of the top 10, were Beatles albums. Whether or not you love the Zelda, to imply that 3 of the top 11 games come from a single franchise is, to me, ludicrous.TL;DR version: This list is terrible, with some games that shouldn’t be there at all, others that should be higher/lower, and plenty of notable games missing. But, once again no surprise coming from G4.
