Quite simply, would it be possible to add a plugin for the servers that allows spectators to talk to the players in the text chat?
As I have no mic, I’ve found myself being completely unable to contact anyone while spectating the matches. Spectators can already talk to players using voice chat, after all.
EDIT: Also, Halloween mode’s off.

August 17, 2012 at 8:58 am #48388Wait, I’m confused. You saying all the typing I did in the text chat was ignored?
August 17, 2012 at 9:02 am #48389Other spectators can see it, but that’s it.
Unless people just don’t want to say hello back to me…August 18, 2012 at 1:33 am #48499Spectators get kicked from MvM servers after too long. Reason being, each robot on the other team takes up a user slot. The more people in the game who aren’t playing is taking away robots on the other team.
August 18, 2012 at 9:40 pm #48634Auto kicking?
Or does a mod come around and kick people?
August 19, 2012 at 12:33 am #48643It’s automatic.
August 19, 2012 at 8:03 am #48677Out of interest, just how often is that even an issue? Only time I can think of off the top of my head where it may happen is the 150 Scout wave of Decoy. Let’s face it, the majority of matches on these servers will be in Normal Mode, where it’s not even an issue.
Seriously, even the official Mann Up servers allow for spectators. Is it really THAT big of a problem to warrant banning spectators altogether?
August 19, 2012 at 11:16 am #48693The Mann Up servers I’ve been in didn’t allow spectators to stay. There are plenty of waves that have large groups at once. How many people actually want someone who isn’t in the game yelling at the players? Distracting the players? Giving the players information on things they can’t see? You’re assuming only one or two spectators; what about when Fraser’s on and everyone tries to join his game? What would be our cut-off number? One? Two? How is that ‘fair’ to everyone who wants to spectate?
We’re not changing it.
August 19, 2012 at 11:41 am #48701Also, it’s rather annoying wanting to play MvM but having to wait a half hour or longer because the Spectators in the other servers won’t join the non-full one. It’s happened a lot this weekend.
Example:
Server 1 has 7 people, Server 2 has 8 people, and Server 3 has 2 people waiting for others to join so they can start playing. If those 3 Spectators had just joined Server 3, everyone could be playing…
August 19, 2012 at 12:04 pm #48703I’m watching a Mann Up game right now and there are several people who can vouch for me. I’ve barely ever seen 26 bots out at once. Actually, every person I’ve asked about it has been quite happy for spectators to be there. Naturally when Fraser’s on it’s a different story but aside from that, the amount of people spectating the servers rarely went past one or two.
In most situations, people join spectator because all 3 servers are full. If people are spectating a match while there’s a server free, and enough people join the free server that a match is possible, why can’t you join the server and invite the spectators yourself? I highly doubt that most people would turn you down.
August 19, 2012 at 12:38 pm #48705Everyone except the person who posted just before you.
Turning this on and off based on whims of players is not going to happen. We are not going to manually enforce this. If we allow SOME spectators, then people are going to be pissed when they can’t even do that due to spectators already in-game. If ANY map or mode requires full slots for bots, then all maps will have it. We spend enough time moderating everything else, this ONE change will take up countless hours for us to mod even slightly well.
This. Is. Not. Changing. The way the gamemode works on Valve’s end will have to change first.
If it makes it easier for you, consider this one of those rules that I make alone because I’m a dick instead of a group decision, that I’m just the first to speak up on, which we’ve put in place to make things more fair for everyone, and you can just ignore what’s right for the community and push for what you want to do.
August 19, 2012 at 12:47 pm #48707What’s everyone complaining about?
Here’s the way it works. If someone wants to spectate, no biggie. I managed to spectate a little while alone and then when someone left I manage to instantly join.
Now let’s say 5 people spectate and the server does not kick them. Guess what, you just made the game less exciting because less bots will spawn now. Imagine 24 spectators..you’ll only see 1 or 2 bots..boring!!!
So keep the auto kicking, the last thing anyone should do is make the game easier.
August 19, 2012 at 4:29 pm #48739You seem to be taking my comments far more seriously than I am.
Like I said, these were merely suggestions. I’m not THAT bothered by it and I see where you’re coming from, just thought this was a situation that warranted at least some discussion. Clearly, you disagree.
Though really King, how often are you going to get that many spectators?August 19, 2012 at 8:05 pm #48781Here’s this conversation from my perspective:
You: “Let’s do this.”
Me: “We can’t; here why.”
You: “But…”
Me: “No.”
You: But, but…:
Me: “No.”
You: “Come on…”
Me: “No.”
August 20, 2012 at 5:33 am #48846Is that so? Personally, I felt I presented my opinion well enough.
I’ll agree that your side of the conversation looked the same to me, as well.
