Hey everyone! As a few of you may know, I have been working on an idea for a videogame to make.
More specifically, an adventure game that’s inspired by film noir. I’ve had the idea in my head for a couple of months now and I’ve been starting work on it. Originally, it was meant to be a small summer project however I feel like it will take longer than that.
The basic layout of the story/game is that you play as a private investigator known as Nick Thompson, with his partner Lily Clough. Together, you solve cases and try to find as much information about a criminal organisation known as Aurora to take them down.
Similar to Phoenix Wright, there will be 6 separate cases/chapters within the entire game. You interact with many characters and solve puzzles to find clues and to progress.
I will be using this thread to upload my progress of the game’s production, so feel free to comment, offer your opinions, whatever!
July 13, 2012 at 11:44 am #42543At this time, the story layouts for case 1,2,4 and 5 have been fully finished, with ideas for 3 and 6 still floating around.
The dialogue for Case 1 is roughly 80% finished on a first draft, so if anyone wants to read it, send me a message!
Here are the designs I have for the two main characters, Nick Thompson and Lily Clough.
Lily Clough went through three redesigns till I got to that design and I’m happy with it. Nick Thompson’s design has been tweaked since sketching that picture.

You must be logged in to view attched files.July 13, 2012 at 11:51 am #42546Here is a large bulk of character designs for NPCs that you’ll be interacting with in the game. I have some more that haven’t been scanned into my computer just yet.
I’m thinking that each character might have four poses to them, with edited poses to allow for talking and blinking animations.

I liked the look but I felt like something needed tweaking to it, it seemed too plain. I added a suit to Nick Thompson so that he didn’t look too white. It seems to suit the character design so I kept it.
I did some experimenting with the artstyle with a random character design and came up with this sepia tone film grain effect. I personally like it and think it’s a lot more easier on the eyes than the harsh solid colours, what do you guys think?

July 14, 2012 at 10:30 am #42708Just finished working on the main pose of Nick Thompson using the updated art style. What do we think? I think it came out quite well, took me just under an hour to make it.

I’ll be working on the sprites for a little bit now. I’m a bit slow when it comes to writing.

okay thats nice to know, and it would fit well with the tone of the game.

July 16, 2012 at 11:06 am #43145So I don’t burn myself out with too much work, I’m thinking of making 2-3 sprites a day. Trying to do 6 sprites a day will likely injure my wrists (I’ve done so previously with my drawing hand, took me 3 weeks to fully heal. Had to learn to be ambidextrous for a bit!)
So here are the two sprites I’ve done today, 2 poses of the character Richard Ride.

Two more poses for the character Meredith Winters who appears in Case 1.
I might start some work on Case 2 dialogue later tonight!

I’m debating about putting in all this efforts to show her hair style from each side though, as many professional companies don’t even bother.
