Just saw it about 30 minutes ago, easily the best movie of the year so far and probably my favorite superhero movie ever next to The Dark Knight.

    Has anyone else seen this?

Yeah, I’ve seen it. It’s the movie where Sean Connery dresses up in a teddy bear costume, right?

I meant the new one sillywilly!

And for the record that movie was terrible, that scene was only entertaining for the sheer nonsense that was!

I love the 60s TV show the Connery Avengers is based on, classic spy comedy right there.

I am usually incredibly disappointed with most superhero/comic book/the like movies such as Iron Man and the horrendous excuse for a movie that was Transformers. In fact, the only series I can think of off the top of my head that I’ve enjoyed is the Nolan Batman one. So obviously when I heard about this movie I rolled my eyes and shrugged it off as probably another horrible, story-less two hours of explosions and “YEAH! AAAAHMURRIKAH!”. But then I saw that the godly hero of all geeks Joss Whedon had written it and directed it, and felt hope for the future of superhero movies. I am incredibly excited to see this movie now.

TL;DR: Joss Whedon makes everything he touches a masterpiece.

To actually talk about the intended topic, I thought the movie was really really good, not the best movie of the year so far in my eyes but a huge amount of fun. I find Joss Whedon very hit and miss, for example I don’t like Buffy after season 3 but I love Firefly, in the case of The Avengers I think this is the kind of project where he’s a really good choice.

For a start he’s clearly a fan of the material but more importantly he ISN’T a fanboy, when Zach Snyder came to put Watchmen on the screen his fanboy attitude towards the source material was a key element of it’s failure, it ended up being the equivalent of a guy filming himself jerking off over the graphic novel while forcing us to read it. What Whedon has done as a level headed fan is craft a loving depiction of these characters and their universe without taking it that step too far and that is very impressive. All in all the writing is very clever and funny, also I’m amazed that they managed to make the Hulk an interesting character but they managed it (lots of credit to Ruffalo for that of course).

It’s great to see these characters, who’s individual movies were very variable in quality, come together in such a solidly entertaining, well written, well acted and well directed movie. It’s be a crying shame if it was a disappointment to the fans so it’s fantastic to see it turn out as such a rousing success.

overall i though it was awesome, but I had a few personal gripes abut the movie mainly that I wanted to see more Hawkeye (I’m a huge Hawkeye fan) in the movie since he really did not get any character times at all and we didn’t get a feel for his personality at all if you did not already know what he is like outside of the battlefield, also i though that the new Bruce Banner was not as good as Edward Norton was in the original movie.

those last 2 post-credits scenes were awesome though especially the one that tells the villain for the next movie. I won’t spoiler it since we don’t have spoiler tags on this forum but lets just say I think the avengers are gonna have their HANDs full with their next adventure.

I saw the movie last night with a group of friends and I thought it was a lot of fun. The jokes were handled well and the last half-hour was one of the best sequences I’d ever seen in a superhero film.
