I always love this kind of enthusiastic response.
I think we do need some building rules. Aside from the standard don’t-build-too-close and don-be-a-dick. I don’t want the place to be super random, since that’s been done so many times. That being said, we shouldn’t restrict ourselves to building with just dirt…
As for the name, we should decide on that before we get the pp collected. Since we are still waiting on hearing from littlemissdemi though, let’s put a deadline for votes to be next Saturday? That would give her a week to respond and a week to decide.
August 19, 2012 at 9:31 am #48683Well since we have a big lake to build around and since I’m a total bookworm how about we name it Walden Pond where Henry David Thoreau lived and wrote for two years as a naturalist hermit. I’ll admit I’m not the biggest Thoreau fan but the name just seems right somehow.
Or, you know, C.U.M. works too :P
August 19, 2012 at 1:02 pm #48709Hmm, honestly, why don’t we NOT get too creative with the name? The Hermitage was the name for the group in the olympics and it would work now.
August 19, 2012 at 3:56 pm #48727The lake could be named Walden Pond while the town/gathering place would be called the Hermitage. I didn’t get a chance to participate in the Olympics with hermits but I’d like to help out with this.
August 19, 2012 at 4:30 pm #48741I wouldn’t mind that. I think I’ll make a nice quaint inn by the lake so we all have a place to spawn while we’re there.
Also, for those of you who have been out there have you seen the odd shape at x=-12318, z=+9052? It looks like a house.
August 19, 2012 at 5:12 pm #48748That was just a hut me and goodroy had to hide in and store our stuff
August 19, 2012 at 7:41 pm #48775So we got a portal and some work has been done like lighting and outlining. I’m just digging y12 around. Currently found a mineshaft, caves, ravines, the usual.
August 19, 2012 at 7:56 pm #48777Any restrictions on where we build houses near the portal? I’ve identified a spot at -12695, +8910 that looks like a nice spot to stick something. If nobody objects, I’m going to set up a little place there.
August 19, 2012 at 9:47 pm #48796I’d say just be respectful of what other people are building. I think we should still consider how we should make the place cohesive. Maybe a touch of dirt for every building? Or brown wool? What do you guys think?
I also don’t know how permanent we want to make homes there. I know Luckysimon wanted to work on an inn? I know a lot of people on the server were talking about ruining the concept of Hermitdom by doing it, but I don’t really care. Soo, discuss.
August 19, 2012 at 10:21 pm #48800I’m not sure on the whole “ruining the idea of hermitdom” thing. Minecraft hermitdom is just a desire to build things on your own. Having this in addition to our own builds isn’t really breaking any kind of moral code of hermitdom. I like the idea of a gathering spot for those of us who mostly do our own thing. If the Hermit town is cool, and people visit it, it will also help to draw attention to some of the exceptional hermit builds on the server.
I think people should put up a cool home or structure in hermit town with directions to their hermit builds, so others can visit. There’s so many cool things on the server that you might never see just randomly clicking around the map tool.
It might look a little non-cohesive if people build things that are representative of their “home” builds, when those builds might not necessarily fit in with one another, but I don’t really think that’s such a horrible thing either. Maybe we should just try to not put things that obviously clash in close proximity to each other. I don’t think any kind of building code — especially one to make things look ugly or temporary — would really help at all. I think people should build cool things that they want other people to see.
I do think we should avoid gargantuan “mega” builds in the town unless they’re collaborative efforts. Beyond that, why not let people be creative? I think that’s the true spirit of hermitdom.
August 19, 2012 at 11:29 pm #48811Here’s what I’d like to do. if you follow the river the portal structure is in you get to a bend where the three biomes meet. This is where I’d like to build the general structures. Warehouses for storing resources for build challenges, an inn, a tavern, etc.
On the ‘hermit coast’ we can build plots with something representing our different build sites, with info inside. These could act as the ‘houses’.
We’re eventually going to need a wall of some sort around the town for some mob protection and astetics, maybe even a sewer or aquaduct system, etc.
I kinda want to make the main town area more like an actual fronteir boom town, and stick mostly to wood and stone crafting with maybe some wool things for decorations.
Just remember, we’re on the edge of the server and they plan to expand the server by a few thousand when they do the update (last I heard anyway) so a town on the edge of an unknown frontier seems rather fitting.
Mind you, like the real world, we can grow beyond that aesthetic over time. Also, the dirty thing was just a joke at the olympics because we had to travel alone from all over the world. We don’t need hermits in general to be dirty so we don’t need to focus on that :D
August 19, 2012 at 11:51 pm #48815I like those ideas, Simon. Perhaps at the center we could have structures themed to their biome?
For instance – For the Tundra, we could go with Viking/Nordic style, the Desert could be American West/Native American And the forest could be log cabins and such. All three are primarily wood/stone (with the exception of adobe stuff in American West) so I don’t think they’d look too out-of-place with one another, especially with the river as a natural divide.
I could build a Viking longhouse (almost entirely timber structure) as a warehouse-type structure in the tundra there. If people don’t want to go that route, I can stick it further out on that -12695, +8910 site I mentioned above to keep it out of the town center.
August 20, 2012 at 12:21 am #48819sounds good to me, we’ll see what the others think.
August 20, 2012 at 1:26 am #48822the idea of having different “homes” with directions to our home builds sounds good to me. and brashnir’s idea of having it themed to the biomes sounds interesting too.
in the exact center of town i would like to put up a fountain with the names of all hermits on it. and a wool path leading to each biome. like yellow for the desert and light green for the forest and such.
ill see what i can do with and aquaduct. ive built one in my home and it looks pretty good in my opinion.
as far as the dirt thing goes. i would say we drop it. having a dirty look was just for the olympics and in general dirt isnt the nicest material to work with.
as far as rules go, i would say that we dont build extremely large builds. to try and keep the look and feel of the town as just that, a small town. a bunch of small cozy buildings instead of a mess with all types of wierdness. we dont want to turn this into random.
August 20, 2012 at 2:17 am #48825first off sorry i haven’t been on, im in the middle of a back to back long shifts at work. secound i have an idea for fast travel we can have two railroads to each biome or house, one to and one from. i also heard that becky considerd herself a hermit maybe we can make her a honorary hermit and make her a house.
