There’s a timeout message? Opera must really be bugging up…

Yes, but they are only shown to the person who gets timed out.

I’m not part of the turbo club, but good to see this in action. Kshade i know what you do is a thankless job, so I want to give my thanks for all that you have done for the show.

    kshade:
It’s not really a problem with being vulgar, it’s more about not watering down the meaning of that word by casually inserting it into everyday conversations. If you’d like to know a bit more I’d suggest reading this potentially disturbing article.

That said, you can still use the word but only to describe actual rape and not for the sole purpose of telling a joke. In other words, there will be very little reason to use it in chat since the subject usually won’t come up in gaming.

I actually cried. In case it wasn’t obvious, something like this happened to me when I was young. It wasn’t physically violent at all – maybe not even technically rape, but it still stuck with me and left me with body issues that makes it hard for me to identify as either gender even now.

I really respect and admire the crew for doing this – it means a lot to me, especially since that whole fiasco with Tosh.0

(Not even sure if that’s what started all this, but it was the first thing I thought about.)

Hencetoforthwith, our childhoods shall only be molested.

I would like to think, though I can’t say it’s a solid rule or not without plenty of mod discussion, that we could let sexual molestation references and implications fall under the same umbrella as rape. I mean, really– same principle, guys. Let our childhoods be sullied, decimated or demolished.

KShade, I would just like to say that I am very happy that this rule is being enforced. It makes me proud to be a part of this community. Not proud to be a part of a society where we need this rule, but baby steps. <3

Personally, i think even saying the words “rape” or “molest” in chat should be an automatic timeout. Just my two cents

Just out of curiosity, where would the line be drawn? If it’s just about not wanting to water down the meaning of the word, then the majority of the jokes that are made in the chat should fall under the same rule.

Edit : Also, auto-timeouting wouldn’t work, they both have their place in legitimate speech.

We don’t auto-timeout; we use discretion. Otherwise we’d just bots.

Basically, unless you’re stating a hard fact (“There is a rape scene in this game.”), there’s really no need to use the word. Beyond that, you’re either using it as an euphemism for some other act (usually damaging the weight the word should carry), making a threat (which we won’t tolerate) or talking about something srs bzns like the Rape of Nanking (and we don’t allow that sort of super serious talk anyhow). I very much disagree that all of the humor in chat would fall victim to this rule. This rule has a fairly narrow scope with a specific purpose and we (as mods) are not going to go around enforcing it in an unjust and willy nilly fashion.

I’d like to mention that the word “molest” does not always mean sexual assault. That’s its second definition. Its first definition is “to bother, interfere with, or annoy.”

For example: “The fans have been molesting VGA with requests for games to play.”
There’s nothing offensive or improper about that sentence.

Does anyone in the 21st century use its original definition? Probably not regularly. But it’s not obsolete.

Mhmmm, and there are plenty of other words that one could argue the technical correct definition. The obvious one “gay” meaning “happy” but many others. The problem is that doesn’t really matter when 99% of the population no longer uses the words to mean the same thing. It’s a shame when a word’s original meaning gets pushed to the side enough that it ceases to matter in a practical sense, but that is how life and language go. In this case it’s really no hardship to use “pester” or another synonym in place of a word that overall has a different implied meaning in current culture.

Sidenote, casual while we’re having this discussion I’d like to put in my own two cents that I’d be all for the molesting jokes also being under the ruling. You know as well as anyone that I’m no prude, heh; but yes that is another topic that can seriously open a can of worms. I can’t think of a gentle way to say this so I’ll just say that I know a number of people close to me who actually were molested as kids; so while the jokes don’t “offend” me perse, that is another category of jokes that for one, is no joke in real life, and for two can bring up all kinds of things that aren’t really what you want to think about while trying to chill and watch a show. You guys do what you feel is right but thought I’d put in my honest 2 cents on it, for what it’s worth.

So were people just using the word in jokes and out of context alot lately in the community? Personally I haven’t noticed it…maybe ’cause I’m a hermit.

Aside from that, I’m fine with decision as it doesn’t effect me at all.
