From what I gather by reading the server rules, mob grinders are not allowed on the Awesome server. Still, this grinder is quite cool. We have on built on the NeoCraft server and it works as advertised. Doesn’t appear to cause lag either (unlike that blaze grinder, *shudders*). If you haven’t seen it before I recommend bulding one offline or check one out elsewhere. It really is quite impressive.

June 16, 2012 at 10:48 am #37698I asked if the server had one in the Minecraft : Q & A topic to which KShade responded
” No. In fact there’s a mod installed that makes XP farms near-useless. In short, we don’t like grinders. Don’t make ‘em. ”
He also said earlier in the message” Another reason why those things are banned is that we feel that they take away from the game and go against the spirit of the server/Minecraft. ”
So, I doubt you’ll see one any time soon. Which is unfortunate, as I feel that grinders, effiency and industrialization are the biggest part of Minecraft.
June 16, 2012 at 5:09 pm #37757Why make grinders? Just take a good ol’ sword and murder things!
June 16, 2012 at 6:04 pm #37768or find a spawner. I got lucky that I found a spawner only 4 blocks below ground in my community.
June 17, 2012 at 2:29 am #37797Until 1.3, getting anywhere near 50 takes a lot more than swinging a sword for a while. Also, this is a great way to get ender pearls, and once you’ve played with ender pearls and feather falling boots you’ll never go back to walking around like a chump ever again.
June 17, 2012 at 3:47 am #37801It was meant to take a longer time when you’re a higher level, it only makes sense. In what RPG have you seen getting to the high levels as being real easy?
Just have a bloody patience.June 17, 2012 at 6:48 am #37818I ain’t saying it’s a bad idea to have an exponential levelling system, I’m saying that because of the time it takes and the amount of times players die randomly per hour that probably as much as 90% of people won’t get to see anything better than Fortune II or Efficiency III.
Also, in most RPG’s you don’t lose XP for dieing, which is the main difference.

June 17, 2012 at 11:09 am #37846Erm I have 3 fortune 3 picks and currently 3 silk touch picks and a sword that can murder just about anything in a hit or 2 along with several peices of diamond armor that are high level enchantments. Leveling up isn’t hard. Add to that the dropping to 30 max for enchanting I can agree with but the mining and smelting and getting xp drops is a tad ridiculous. I so want 1.3 to be here now because of all the changes but I honestly think that this update is probably one of the most game changing updates yet. So much has been put into this update to make the game much much easier and I’m not sure if that is a good thing.
June 17, 2012 at 6:55 pm #37935For me, I find the grinders don’t make the game too easy. When I play Minecraft it’s to build, not as an MMORPG. That said, I don’t play on creative as I find it would get boring quite quickly. Part of what keeps things interesting is finding ways to build structures in survival (building my aquadome safely, without sponge handouts from the moderators, took some trial and error). I mine to collect my resources, go out kill mobs when I feel like it, and when I want a good weapon/tool I head to the grinder.
Each to their own though, I always try to respect the ways others play (except for griefing, no respect for that on a non-pvp/griefing server).
To get back closer on topic, one grinder I’ll likely stay away from now on is the Blaze grinder. Before the Enderman grinder it was the quickest way to get EXP. The side effect was you got a crapload of blaze rods. I haven’t had to touch my coal supplies for months as a result.
June 18, 2012 at 7:52 am #38014I still don’t understand why grinders are hated so much. Well, I do understand, but it only makes sense when building in Minecraft is some sort of competition. Maybe this really is a competition, I dunno. Personally I never understood the i-am-better-than-you mindset that some people might have shown. I can go to anyone’s place and just say all nice things, if that’s what people really want (and praising doesn’t cost a penny!). But I doubt it. I always felt that we’re doing this for our own satisfaction, and we’re the most harsh critic to ourselves. If you want to impress others with your build, I’m all for it, but in the end it only matters to you, because it’s only you who know all the efforts you have paid. If you’re being honest and people praise your work, that’s your true reward. If you’re not being honest (whatever it means), no matter how many people praise your build, it’s a terrible build. Maybe I’m making this too much introspective, but this is what I always feel about a discussion about grinders.

June 18, 2012 at 12:52 pm #38063I dont really have a opinion on the topic if grinders make the game too easy, its everyones own decision if they want to use them or not. But what I can say from my experience as server admin on now two private servers is the following:
Grinders always produce lag, they differ in the severeness (Blaze grinders are the worst), but as soon as the grinder starts everyone will notice it, I tried countering it by increasing the ammount of RAM but its not really of any use. The worst thing for the most part is, that the person who operates the grinder will get the least lag of all people on the server. Its strange, but thats how it is on my two servers.
We handled it as follows, my peeps can build grinders, but they have to be controllable (Spawning ON/OFF switch), and you can only activate and use your grinder if no one else is online. Since these rules probably arent realistic for a server as big as MCA I would say keep it as it is and dont have any grinders.

Actually, it is only a part of the story. People object to grinders for different reasons. Some of them hate grinders because of lag, while others object to them on “ethical” ground. And some other people conveniently switch from one reason to another, depending on who they’re talking to. And I think this makes the whole discussion about grinders a lot murkier than it should be. If we can treat this as a purely technical problem, that’s great. If it turns out that any form of grinder causes unacceptable amount of lag and should be banned, so be it. But when someone starts saying that grinders must be banned because they are unholy, it causes a deep divide among us, which I found really unnecessary. I have seen a similar debate several times, and we have lost some members because of this (although I doubt this was the only reason). Every time I see this, it makes me wonder if a different stance about grinders is such a big obstacle that we can’t overcome, otherwise we’re perfectly fine with playing with each other. Maybe I’m just ranting here. I wish I didn’t see this thread because I really don’t need grinders myself. But I just hope people can be a bit more sympathetic to those who have different opinions. After all, we are here to be nice to each other. Sorry for babbling.
June 19, 2012 at 10:05 am #38215No problem babbling. :)
Basically the way I see it, if grinders are banned on the server I won’t try to find a way around it. That said, people shouldn’t look down on servers who use them. In most cases it’s only the vocal minority who would complain about them anyway. It’s quite a trivial thing, but this is the internet after all. Lets just say they exist with those who like them and those who don’t. If a person really wants to see a grinder in action all they have to do is hop an another server and check it out.
As for the general discussion on grinders, an off and on project of mine is to build a zombie pigman grinder. It’s pretty much the same design as the enderman grinder. The fun part will be preventing/reducing mob spawning outside the grinder (it is said a radius of 144 blocks is required for peak production). I’m thinking lava. Lots and lots of lava./evil
June 19, 2012 at 10:17 am #38217People hate grinding because its “cheap”; there’s an unwritten rule that the only “legitimate” way to collect mob drops is by hunting mobs out in the wild, while grinding is “exploiting” the game mechanics in an unintended way. Basically you’re “gaming” the game, rather than playing it the way you’re supposed to play it, and people see “gaming” the system as taking the fun out of the game. This is very subjective, I know, but the server has always been dedicated to “legitimacy”, so there’s a precedent for hating grinders. Duping, for example, is another example of something the game allowed you to do, but was still frowned upon because it was “exploitative” and “illegitimate”.
