Fondell, you got some things mixed up.
I can understand the Quake and UT comparison (since all the tribes games are made with the Unreal Engine) but I can’t see the Halo one.Tribes is fairly unique, the only things that aren’t are the gamemodes as everyone has done them before, but it still adds its own unique twist. It’s mechanics are very different from any game. For starters there’s the skiing, that makes all the maps designed for that main mechanic. This also makes tribes rely on speed, no other game lets you go over 200KPH, this makes Tribes all about skill, as there are no things in this game that are OP or cheap, unlike Halo were vehicles are vastly superior than you. The vehicles can be taken out by almost every weapon making them only effective with the right tactics. Like you said shooting someone with a Spinfusor at top speed is hard to do, but that is the main combat mechanic making Tribe’s gunplay like no other.
Then there’s the art style, you say the characters remind you of Master Chief, but that can be said about any Space Soldier really. People would hate you for saying Doom guy looks like master chief even though he kinda looks like him. While most video game armors look very similar, Tribes stands out a bit with it’s color coated factions and easy to stand out helmets. The Blood Eagles look the most generic as the Diamond Sword all have giant swords on their backs making them more identifiable. At the end of the day art style for futuristic armor is extremely difficult to make 100% unique and Tribes does a pretty good job to be different.
I don’t think comparing 2 games to describe 1 is ever a very good thing to do. Almost all games are different from the other and just saying it’s like Quake and Halo does it do it justice and is just the most simplistic way possible to describe anything. If Fraser said anything about the mechanics it would of been fine but he basically just said, “It’s like Quake and Halo, the end”.

It’s not just the Armour, they are both very stylistically similar:

This isn’t even vaguely a bad thing, though.
As for comparing 2 games, it’s a reasonable thing to do to give people a starting block. Fraser is clearly new to Tribes, so he’s not gonna be able to go very in-depth, so instead having some examples of what it’s similar to is a good way to give people a chance to picture roughly what it’s like.
April 12, 2012 at 4:57 pm #24316Dangit, I knew it was fondell, I second guessed myself though. I’ll change it.
@gram Yea, but when you don’t say anything else about the game it doesn’t make sense.
EDIT: Also notice the artstyle difference, Tribes is more colorful and bloomy.-

April 12, 2012 at 7:48 pm #24354To all the people arguing about tribes; they do look similar, similar doesn’t mean the same. Get over it.
April 12, 2012 at 11:12 pm #24381That’s just that screenshot, halo is pretty bright and bloomy too sometimes
April 13, 2012 at 12:31 am #24386Only think that really irks me is that the show takes usually several days to be on youtube. I hope Farsher would up the stream itself on somewhere, no cuts or anything. Doesn’t stream sites usually offer that function?

Doesn’t stream sites usually offer that function? They do offer it but there’s no way to imbed ads into the stream. Ad revenue is what makes it so that the show can continue to run so it’s not an option unfortunately.
He usually gets shows posted within 60 hours of the show being streamed live so it’s really not that long of a wait. Also be thankful, there was a time where there were maybe 2 streams a week instead of the 5 a week that there are now : D (excluding the last two weeks where there have been tech issues/pax/sickness getting in the way of streaming).

That’s just that screenshot, halo is pretty bright and bloomy too sometimesYea I figured, but as Tribes runs on Unreal it is very stylized with it’s filtering and makes it look more fictional then Halo.
April 13, 2012 at 9:24 am #24447I get that tribes doesn’t look exactly like Halo, but I don’t think it’s wrong to say they look similar. If you’ve never played a game you’re going to compare it to games you have when you can. That’s just how the human mind works. People were comparing Journey to Limbo because of the way there’s no dialogue and a strong focus on atmosphere. The games are radically different in many ways, but they’re not wrong for making a comparison between them. No one is saying that Tribes is the same as Halo, just that they share some similar features.
April 13, 2012 at 11:00 am #24459Sorry Pariah, but I imagine your posts with an old man’s voice.
“VGA used to be on Blistered Thumbs… AND WE LIKED IT! I won’t go on youtube with all those whippersnappers.”
Youtube isn’t that hard to use, it’s just different, takes a while to get used to it, but for me it’s pretty smooth.
You are allowed your opinion about how BT and Blip are very important to you, but try to get your facts straight. VGA is still going strong, it just uses different outlets for convenience.
April 13, 2012 at 6:52 pm #24566I’m surprised that there’s someone that doesn’t like youtube and their playlist options. I’m glad they switched over to Youtube, because Blip was annoying with its ads and audio desyncs. Plus, when you watched the videos on the blisterthumb sites, because there’s so much videos, the page just lags like heck for me. And regarding the main topic, as most people say, Fraser is definitely annoying a lot of the times, but it’s just something you get use to or tolerate. :d
April 16, 2012 at 12:27 pm #25044Personally I think the show would be a lot duller if Fraser knew what he was doing and what he was talking about at all times. There’s a reason vga is as popular as it is. The first episode I ever saw was Shadow of the Colossus. I clicked into it because it was one of my favorite games and he trolled like crazy while he was playing it and had no idea what he was doing…and I’m still here.
April 21, 2012 at 5:07 pm #25885I admit some of Fraser’s clueless-ness is what makes the show fun, but I think he needs to work on figuring out when to keep it in.
