Just got out of a conference where people argued about the next generation consoles. They are a couple years off at the least, but really… who actually wants them? Companies don’t, why should they? We make money off of current games and system so much why should they change? You can almost argue that wii u is merely this gen and is late to the party. But new consoles are far too expensive to make currently amongst other reasons. The console wars have since died off, i mean most games come out for most consoles, and the line between ps and xbox is slim. Look at the amazing graphics and games that are coming out for current works! Do people want the new console? Not sure they do. Expensive costs, and long delays for many games seems to make people say no. E3 ran most games on pc, because it has best graphics and the best core. Its amazing, but everyone will always say look my pc does it better. As long as people continue to buy tons of games companies have no rush on this. What is it 5+ years of these consoles and yet they still ride the wave. Developers prefer the current consoles, and can make games great for them. So big question…Can these companies even make the next jump? You guys tell me, do you want an xbox 720 tomorrow? do you want a ps4 today? A revolution or anything of the sort? why?

I haven’t gotten a console new since the previous generation. I don’t remember if I got a Gamecube new; but I remember getting a PS2 new. I got both the Wii and PS3 a year after they came out. To me, it’s worth waiting until the price drops, especially considering how much less I actually use it in comparison to the N64/PS1. I’ve said before how I really only use the Wii to play Gamecube games these days. With the PS3 it’s split maybe 60/40 or so for playing PS3 vs PS1 games. Right now I have Final Fantasy Tactics running in it.

I have to say, while I’m not one of those console bashing snobs, I find myself becoming more and more of a PC gamer. Steam has become the ‘platform’ I use the most.

I could handle 4-5 more years of ps3, but I only really got into playing current gen games this year. At the same time though the limitations of the current gen consoles are growing apparent when games are having to take a significant drop in quality compared to PC releases. If the price tag could come down to somewhere between $250-$350 I could see myself getting the next gen playstation console.

Personally, I consider the WiiU a next Gen console, but that is just me.

Same here. Even when I was a console gamer I didn’t really care about a new console. Games were looking great. And consoles were are ready very powerful. But now that im on steam. I still really hold the same position.

I really like the progression in not only graphics, but in processing power that comes from each generation. Ideally I would just have everything on PC, but since consoles don’t seem to be going away they have to be able to run the games we’re getting on PC at least reasonably well with graphics that don’t look too bad in comparison. You couldn’t have one miyon troobs on the PS2, but can we go for a biyon?

That being said, if game companies can’t finance games at the level required for creating a next-gen experience without stuffing greedy DLC down our throats, then I guess I can wait awhile.

technically it is and it isnt, its got next gen core, and different utilization. i’d say its a slight next gen console or perhaps as next gen as it is for now. It displays sum games beautifully i must say.

So would you say a new console with a lifespan in their mind of 10+ years is reasonable even with technology and its advancements?

Well how about a game that costs 80 with all dlc free? almost like the rockstar pass? and dlc that would span a year, at atleast about 4 or 5 new missions packs, etc. Most dlc lately seems like its not even worth it. And some you get games like dragon’s dogma which is a great game and its dlc is awful!

I find myself leaning more toward pc. It can handle and render greater, and thats what most companies, including mine even display games on for demos trailers and more.

I’m interested to see what sort of technology and such the P.S.4/720 will have, but that’s about it. You can bet they’ll be pushing their motion-control crap even more, not to mention all this D.L.C., D.R.M., and other stupid acronyms that have been so prevalent this generation. Honestly the only thing that i am really looking forward to in the following generation is Watch Dogs, which isn’t even ‘true’ next-gen.

I hope it never comes. It took YEARS for this gen to really get going, and I don’t wanna wait that long again. Other than maybe Vita, there hasn’t been enough worthwhile games at/around launch for a system since 2001. Wii U needs half of their games to be ports to actually have a decent launch apparently.

Seriously, SNES and GCN should be the standard for system launches. GCN’s launch was fantastic. Seriously in like 2-3 months you had, Luigi’s Mansion, Pikmin, Smash Bros. Melee, a new Wave Race, Rogue Squadron 2, SSX Tricky, Super Monkey Ball etc and a consistent amount of decent releases until the middle of 2005. PS3 had the excuse that they had a lack of exclusives for a while because of their competition at least but the 360 didn’t get that much beyond mediocre shooters until late 2008 and Wii could go from tons of games to no games at any time for no reason. It’s so weird how such a basic thing has been forgotten.

Its hard to explain from within the industry but often big companies shift focus or have too many oars and they lose footing. Now there really isn’t so much competition as each wishes to merely catch up with each other. Or perhaps we focus so much on what is in front of us when something new spurts we no longer now how to handle it anymore. New launches seem like not a big deal because they still focus on the current console. It’s basic to us gamers at heart but those who focus so much, like my company, on certain things that a launch’s simplicity and formula is lost to 90 billions things that have since happened. There was a small structer than too. It makes sense from our mind buts developers are so scattered doing many games, its no longer simple. Or do our expectations become to big?

$80 games would face some resistance at first, but if games looked like 1313 and had AI and mechanics that seemed to make good use of next gen technology I think they would be accepted in time. An extra $20 is better than having to spend $5-$10 a month on flimsy DLC.
