NEW UPDATE JULY 19TH!!! (See Bottom of Post)
Welcome to the Games of the First Minecraft Awesome Olympiad!
Yes, this year we will be holding our very own Summer Olympics in our Minecraft Awesome server. This will not be like other build challenges. No. This will be part build and part event.
Allow me to explain. Holding our very own games necessitates two things: facilities and competitors. If you’re looking to help build the facilities, then this is the thread for you! If you would like to compete, read this first, but please post in the Participant Thread. You DO NOT need to be a competitor in the games to build. Anyone, whether they are competing or not can build the facilities.
So, whether you’re building or competing, here’s the list of events. The specifics of the facilities we need will be posted here. Facilities that have already been assigned will be underlined. Facilities that we still need someone to build will be in bold. More specifics on the competitors we need will be posted in the Participant Thread.
The Events and Facilities
Opening Ceremonies
We will open with the opening ceremonies. Makes sense, no?This will be held in the outdoor Olympic Stadium. It is a running track with an area in the center for numerous events. The exact dimensions of the track are below. Stands surround it, in standard track stadium fashion. The torch will be placed prominently at one end. To avoid draw distance issues, the interior of the stadium (from the top of the stands at one end to the top of the stands on the other end) must be no more than 100 blocks long.
Archery
Competitors fire at a target. The competitors farthest from the center are removed each shot until there is one final winner. In the event of ties, the competitors move back five blocks and fire until someone is eliminated. It is held in the outdoor Archery Stadium. This consists of a line of targets with a place for the competitors to stand 30 blocks away and stands on either side. Specs on target attached.
Basketball
Each team will try to get an orange block of wool into a net made of fenceposts. It is held in the indoor Basketball Arena, a wood plank court with hoops at either end and seating all around.
Boating
A boat race with obstaclesIt is held in the outdoor Boating Track, a large snaking waterway with hazards spread throughout. Viewing platforms line either side.
Diving
Competitors try to perform the best dive.It is held in the indoor Aquatic Center. An indoor olympic sized pool with three diving boards in the center. Specifics on the pool below.
Fencing
Swordfighting tournament. Competitors fight to the death. This is held in the indoor Fencing Arena, a small indoor venue with a rectangular ring in the center with drops around and stands surrounding.
Hurdles
A footrace with lines of blocks to jump over. This is held in the Olympic Stadium. Redstone will pop up lines of blocks to act as hurdles.
Marathon
A long multi-leg race. This will be held in numerous sites in the wilderness, but we need a Marathon Stadium for the very last bit. A length of straight track (perhaps 50 or 100 blocks in length) with stands on either side.
Parkour
Running through an obstacle course. This is held in the outdoor Parkour Stadium, an obstacle course surrounded by stands.
Pig Racing
A team of two try to win the race, one person riding the pig and the other leading the pig with wheat. This is held in the outdoor Pig Racing Stadium, a line of snaking tracks with obstacles surrounded by stands.
Ping-Pong
Two competitors play each other in the most dangerous game in existence… Table Tennis. This is held in the Fencing Arena.
Relay
A team of competitors race around the track, passing a baton between them. This is held in the Olympic Stadium.
Soccer
Teams try to push the sheep into the other team’s goal. This is held in the outdoor Soccer Stadium, a soccer field with stands all around.
Spleef
The famous game that Fraser hasn’t shown off yet. This is held in the indoor Spleef Arena, a square ring made of snow with gates around for competitors to enter surrounded by stands.
Survival
Competitors stand before a chest and then, using only what’s in that chest, fight to see who is the last survivor. This is held in the outdoor Survival Stadium, a large field with cover areas and obstacles surrounded by seating.
Swimming
Multilap Race in the pool. This is held in the Aquatic Center.
Synchronized Swimming
Teams try to swim in sync to create the most beautiful acts the judges have ever seen. This is held in the Aquatic Center.
Triathalon
Three-part race. Part boating, part swimming, and part running. The final leg of the race will end in the Marathon Arena.
Turbo Sticks
Need I say more? This is held in the outdoor Turbo Sticks Arena, a large stadium with different dangerous locations to play Turbo Sticks. See the Turbo Sticks Arena in Noredge for a little inspiration.
Every facility must contain two things somewhere. First, a medal platform of simple design. Secondly, the competitors standing on the medal platform and the spectating audience must be able to see a display of the three flags of the medal-winning nations. Here is the design of the flag display which must be included everywhere:
There will need to be a way of accessing the rear of the flag display, as I will have to get back there and quickly build the flags while we prepare for the medal ceremony.
Now that we’ve got events and facilities, we need competitors.
The Competitors
Our communities will be standing in for the different nations. Specifics on how to submit a team will are given in the Participant Thread.Competing communities will each be building a small dorm building in the Olympic Village. While a standard basic structure, the building is customizeable to show off your community’s unique identity.
So, lets get back down to why we have this thread.
Why We Have This Thread
This thread is to submit to build the facilities. Please understand that things will be looked at strictly, and if they are not up to what is considered quality, we will either tell you to redo it, or we will hand it to someone who can.If you have an event which you think is doable, but isn’t listed here, propose it, and we will see if it is possible and possibly add it to the schedule of events. If there’s a game that isn’t possible, but is still a sport that you think people would like to see the facility for, you can submit that as well as an eye candy build.
So, please, submit for things you want to build here. If you do not have enough people to complete it, you will not be accepted. Please consider what you can and cannot do.
The Schedule
Here’s the planned schedule of events:
July 10th- This thread posted
July 22nd- Building starts
July 29th- Building endsAt the moment, the shows do not have a definite date, but we will attempt to do them during the London Olympics.
Dates are, of course, subject to change.
As for the events, they too are completely subject to change. Any event may be dropped if it is not working correctly or has become to tedious to continue. Fraser does not wish to hold this as a truly serious conversation, but rather as a fun excercise, so please do not hold too much stock in winning. It is possible that any event you enter in may yield no winner.
So, give what you’d like to build. Please give a size for your build no later than Friday July 17th, so we can plan out the complex.
Here’s the set in stone dimensions and design for the racetrack, swimming pool, and archery targets. One pixel is one block.
NEW UPDATE JULY 19TH!!!
I spoke with Fraser last night so there are some a few new events that have been added to the games:Building (Based on Me Casa, suggested by Luckysimon)
Competitors are given a chest with a stack of each type of log and then given ten minutes to build a house. Judges determine the three best houses and dole out the medals. This is held in the outdoor Building Field. It would really just be a wide open field with plots for people to build.
Climbing (Based on GigaTree, suggested by Luckysimon)
Competitors each climb up a mountain, hitting redstone torches on the way up, and try to be the first ones to reach the top. Deductions to time for missing lights. Think of “The Crag”, the finale of each episode from the Nickelodeon kids sports show Guts. This is held on The Mountain. A mountain with 8 (or possibly more if you can fit it in) tracks around it. Tracks must all be identical. Most of the journey will be jumping up blocks like one would jump up a mountain in Minecraft. There will be some obstacles. Redstone torches with levers attached will be sprinkled along the track in a way that it’s possible one may be missed.
Digging (Based on Minecraft Chicken, suggested by Luckysimon)
Competitors are tasked with digging down through dirt to see who can reach the bottom first. However, while one may be the quickest by digging straight down, there are ores scattered around their lane and gathering those ores nets bonuses to your time. This is held in the indoor Digging Arena. 5-8 lanes which are one block deep of dirt with glass on the front like an ant farm so that spectators can see the action. Stands face the wall where the lanes are.
Gauntlet (Suggested by BSUGrad)
Taken from the Anniversary Show. A long corridor with numerous dangers and traps along the way. Who can be the first to make it to the end? This is held in The Gauntlet. It will be a long (possibly snaking to increase the length while not loosing visibility) trench. Everyone will be running at the same time, so it needs to be about 5-7 blocks long, with many fatal traps and pitfalls all along. The pitfalls should get harder towards the end.
This is held in the outdoor Turbo Sticks Arena, a large stadium with different dangerous locations to play Turbo Sticks. See the Turbo Sticks Arena in Noredge for a little inspiration.Rowing (Suggested by Casualruffian)
Teams of rowers line up their boats to create one big boat and race, keeping their boats together in a line. This is held in the outdoor Rowing Track. One long, straight water track with stands on the side.
So, at the moment we still don’t have builders for the Marathon Finish Line, Survival Stadium, Turbo Sticks Stadium, Mountain, Digging Arena, and Gauntlet. Help out if you can.

July 10, 2012 at 10:17 pm #42001Myself, Ace and Nimyanna (The builders of Zeal) would like to build the Spleef Arena. Currently we do not have concrete plans but we will add them as they become available. Current ideas would base the inside loosely on the Spleef arena that was built in Edge (By me) with the interior concourses and exterior likely based off of hockey arenas (Such as the Rogers Center in Vancouver and the Air Canada Center in Toronto).
The Size would be close to 130×100 but may change depending on changes in plans (Which will be posted as they become more discussed). The Arena will be 80×100 blocks in size. There would be a main concourse (On ground level) with the playing field dug into the ground with seating on all sides. There would also be an upper deck for added seating. If time allows a roof may be added as well, made out of glass with stone support for lighting purposes. I have already built a Spleef Arena in Edge and have an understanding of how the game works as well as how the arena would be set up.Redstone could also be used to push competitors out of the gates at the same time to ensure fairness. Current plans could have anywhere from 2 to 8 competitors.
APPROVED – You’ve made a good Spleef Arena in the past, so I trust you to do well with this.

July 10, 2012 at 11:43 pm #42022Can we volunteer already constructed areas for use? This kind of event is pretty much the sole reason I built the colliseum. The ring can be converted for multiple use and very quickly. Also, should I repost my event ideas here from the other thread?
For the record, the inner arena (the area with sand) has a usable area of 80 blocks by 52, large enough for both the running track and pool in our diagram. However, the walls can be moved as needed.
I can also alter the side opposite from the covered side to have a sport for the torch. I’m positive I can rig it so that the torch can be lit from the opposite side by either a fire arrow, or a flame charge.
Final thing for my submission for it to be the ‘olympic stadium’, it’s large enough that I can have every communities flag arround the top, either by the pillers on the top floor, posted on the roof, or as the ‘canvas shade’ that the old colliseum had, with them laying flat pointed down.

We want the entire community to be able to take part in the construction of the main stadium. Making use of your stadium as a center piece would take away that opportunity and would be unfair to all of the other builders that want to participate
The way we see it when a country in real life is preparing for the Olympic games it is a process not only funded but actively built by the people of that country.
Whilst we appreciate the work you have put in and we are sure the Coliseum you have built is amazing, we feel we would like to capture the spirit of the Olympics, not only during the games themselves, but in the coming togeather to prepare for them.

July 11, 2012 at 1:01 am #42035i would like to build the archery range if possible. its quite a simple build but i have a few ideas to make it look the part.
i myself could build it because i can pretty much build 24/7 but if need be i could get some help.
the total size would be 60×50. a roof is optional but i would have to see if time would allow itAPPROVED – This looks great! I approve you, but I need you to widen it to 5 targets. You think you can do that?

July 11, 2012 at 2:28 am #42051I’d like to participate in building the boating course. Also, if Neo Japan is competing I’d like to be part of their team.
APPROVED – DK put in for this too, and I’d like to see more people in the mix, so please work with her and see if you can get more people on it if you need.

July 11, 2012 at 9:13 am #42077I’d like to help build the parkour course, also, I’m going to get some help so it’ll actually get done :p
July 11, 2012 at 10:50 am #42085Fraser has decided to keep the games seperate so that we can have a winter games in two years.
And Ninjakoopa, if you wish to compete, please do so in the Participant Thread.
July 11, 2012 at 1:20 pm #42116Epsilon would like to apply to build the Parkour Event. (Truecolors is helping too)
Here is a google docs page that TC started, and that we will be using throughout the project if we are accepted:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wBhc9VAZ72SdDzNN5qkepvdBm70fJerBQXjFf5EdQPo/edit?pli=1
APPROVED – Please see if you can get an idea of what you’re doing and a size that you can give Thursday or Friday, so I can get the site planned out.

July 11, 2012 at 1:26 pm #42118By 4 to 12 free-runners do you mean 4 to 12 people per team or 4 to 12 people actually competing?
July 11, 2012 at 6:27 pm #42188I was thinking orienteering would be a nice implemention to the roster. It doesn’t really need much except map editing to add markers and some basic signs around. No need to even hide them so it would be a two man job to make it.
July 11, 2012 at 11:24 pm #42253The MC chat got way ahead of this topic. Here are a few we thought about:
1. Egg shot put.
2. Mine cart relay (chaos).
3. Steeple Chase with cactus as hurtles and lava instead of water.July 12, 2012 at 1:01 pm #42355I can’t wait to see this, the winners should get a gold medal with ‘MLG’ on it
