Hi turbos and lil pooyoos,
I was thinking during the animal crossing show right now that okami seems like exactly the type of game vga would love, due to being made of pure rainbows and playing like zelda games. Then I got to thinking back though, and it has A LOT of text. I don’t just mean a few text boxes, I mean buttloads of text 10 minutes at a time. I love the game and it’s one of my all time favs, but do you guys think vga would enjoy it or hate the pacing at the beginning enough to be put off? It picks up a lot, but the first hour or two is pretty slow to say the least.
Pros: gorgeous to look at, zelda style rpg, fun but frasher mode combat, fantastic boss design and environments
Cons: issues with pacing at times, an incredible amount of text, garbled gibberish voices, too easy (more of a pro for frasher though)
Opinions on okami for the show?
June 15, 2012 at 2:19 pm #37525Okami is awesome! Enough room for funny voices as well! I think it is in no way slower paced than Zelda and the “amazing” factor is quite high.
I give it two thumbs up!
June 15, 2012 at 3:38 pm #37542If there is one thing I can say about Fraser, it’s that he hates reading gobs and gobs of text. I’ve never played Okami; but if what you are saying is accurate, I’m not so sure it would be good for the show. Especially if the rest of the game is fun, it would just make the talking segments more arduous.
June 15, 2012 at 5:37 pm #37556I’d say the beginning of the game is the only time this will be a problem.
I’ll admit I want them to play the game because Issun is just made for this show.
June 15, 2012 at 5:47 pm #37559I’m actually not so certain the reading would be bad for the show. I really like frases voices and there are a lot of charming and funny characters. It’s not so much amount of reading but how fun it is to read. It’s why Phoenix Wright works. Plus the general gameplay and combat’s fun.
I think he might need a little guidance on what stuff to ignore though, there are a lot of collectable type things, some of which will be useless to them and a few more annoying than fun side quests. There’s some faff that can be cut to help with the length of the game. It’s not like Skyward Sword where they might actually want to collect everything.
June 15, 2012 at 5:52 pm #37560I don’t think the amount of text should be a problem. Okami is pretty good with not giving too much to read at once and it’s generally evenly placed between game play segments. I’d say the text to game play ratio is comparable to a Zelda game, perhaps slightly more wordy.
The font size in the text boxes is pretty large, one or two sentences fit in a box at a time. So it does go through a few boxes sometimes. I can’t recall them lasting 10 minutes at once, though. If there is, it’s at least not very often.
The game is pretty short, about 30 hours with side quests from what I remember. But the hours get added on when you start doing things like cutting everything open, tormenting random villagers with your acts of god, and picking up small animals and throwing them off cliffs. I think there are enough things to do in this game to make up for the little bit of slow pacing there is.
Also, you can fight enemies with your poop. There is also this character:

June 15, 2012 at 6:11 pm #37563It’s tricky. The beginning of the game suuuucks, and the game goes for far too long. As good as a game as it is, it’d be hard to get the most out of it on the show.
June 15, 2012 at 7:25 pm #37573It’s a nice game to look at, but I think the gameplay is a little too repetitive. It’s not that the combat is way too easy, but there’s little variety to combat for a game that’s pretty long.
I think they shouldn’t try to long haul it. The text can be really slow sometimes and the noises they make when they speak can get a little annoying. And really I just think the game goes on a lot longer than it needs to :/
June 16, 2012 at 6:42 pm #37771I respect the Okami but there’s not really much to work with on a live show with only 2-3 hours with a game that takes like 10 to get started
June 17, 2012 at 5:56 am #37809I think Fraser and the crew can make anything interesting. I’m sure they’d love to try it.
June 17, 2012 at 11:47 am #37852Some things to keep in mind. Not only is there a lot of text, but the speed at which it unravels is sad. Those cutscenes just drag. On the other hand, although the battles may not be the most interesting, at least most of the enemies are skippable, which would be a good thing for Fraser.
If they can do Zelda, they can do Okami. Though, I will admit that I’m neither a big fan of Okami or their Skyward Sword playthrough. Some games with a slower pace don’t lend themselves well to a VGA show.
June 17, 2012 at 1:34 pm #37864You realize we played Zelda Skyward Sword right? There’s no difference in text between the two.
June 17, 2012 at 2:17 pm #37885Mmmh I played Okami 100% twice, once on PS2 at a friends place, and once on Wii on my own. And If my memory serves me correct there is much more text in Okami. Even if the ammount of text is comparable, there is way less gameplay in Okami. But that is not the main reason why I think the game would be wrong for the show.
I just think, like others have said before, that Okami is terribly repetetive. The fighting system lacks depth and fun IMO, which is made worse by unresponsive controls on the WII (which im gonna guess would be Frasers system of choice). Plus it lacks the WOW factor that the dungeons and bosses in Zelda have. I mean they have you fight the same set of bosses twice, thats just lazy.
TL;DR Not a good fit for the show because of too much text, repetetive gameplay and fighting mechanics, and recycled bosses.
June 17, 2012 at 4:27 pm #37901Yeah I forgot about the recycling of bosses, that’s a valid point too. I didn’t find the combat or enemies terribly repetitive, a bit perhaps, but I was rarely ever challenged by any of the combat in the game with one or two exceptions. I also heard the wii controls for okami compared to the ps2 are very awkward like you said.
June 20, 2012 at 12:58 am #38407Well with the news of a HD re-release for PS3 with Move support I think they will probably play that version when it comes out, although it’s supposed to come out in the Fall, which going to be a very busy time for games.
