Since Adventure Month! is nearing it’s end, you can buy portals again! The new pricing is based on a point system so you can pay with more than just diamonds and we can give back the things we get to build challenges. These new prices were discussed beforehand in this thread.

EDIT: We are no longer accepting wool, because 1.1 and wool regrowth
    Here’s how it works

Just get enough materials to get up to 2000PP (PortalPoints). For example, 110 diamonds, 130 iron, and 128 lapiz blocks would be enough, because (10*110)+(2*130)+(5*128)=2000.

Please also have a portal on your end and 2 signs ready.

Communities and exceptional builds may get an overground portal. The rules for that will be announced later, but there will likely no additional costs.

Here are (as of Jan. 31, 2012) the sorts of portals you can make:

Keep in mind that you can place blocks around these designs to make whatever shape you’d like so long as the hole is the right shape and surrounded by the same material.

When will the portal to the old world open up?

Portals don’t have to be a certain size, I don’t think. There is likely a limit the mods have that is reasonable, but I don’t think that it’s a big deal.

Yea they do unfortunately. I’ve used/use the stargate plugin on my server and you can make custom portal files. It isn’t hard and can be done with most materials. At one point I built a portal out of red wool in the shape of a heart; when it was powered up the portal material was red flowers that fell out of it. Kind of cool but totally impractical on this server.

Best bet is when the old world is re-booted (or if you have downloaded it) look at those portals to get an idea. If you have the old world files downloaded go to bukkit/craftbukkit/plugins/Stargate/gates. Open the files with notepad or the equivalent.

    -hope that helps.

Portal to the Old World is open at the Hub. Look for the H.

Portals currently work in the following sizes/materials:

5×5 in wool and wood planks
4×5 in smooth stone, wool (any color or combination of colors), and obsidian
    4×4 in wool
3×4 in iron blocks (maybe, not sure we still have that set up)

Numbers are the size of the frame, not the size of the portal (where the purple animation shows up). I can’t think of the dimensions off-hand, but ‘Stargate’ shaped portals should still work… people tend to have trouble getting the shape right, so I wouldn’t recommend trying one without checking with the ones set up in the Old World Hub; some sizes of Stargate shaped portals have water animations instead of the standard portal animation.

Just wondering, what is the difference between Standard and Stargate portal?

In what way? There are the portals anyone can build (obsidian) that takes you to the Nether, and the portals only mods can activate using a plugin that connects any two portals on the map.

Ok. I just got confused when I seen some with water and some with the purple animation. I never seen a portal with the water animation so I was thinking it was something different. I see where you just meant some sizes use the water animation.

Can you pre-purchase a portal? As in, buy it first so you don’t have to bring the valuables with you as you scout for a location?

I think we’ve done that for people in the past.
