The chat has literally no benefit to the show anyways. Make the Mods deal with the chat and make them speak directly with Fraser. The chat isn’t funny, it isn’t entertaining and I have trouble believing there’s anyone who watches these shows and pays even 1% of their attention on that chat box aside from when its mentioned.

That said, I suppose some jokes were made at its expense, but so what?

Well the chat was never really there for the viewers to watch, it’s so that the fans can interact with the hosts. Do you want them to remove them from the screen and still interact with the chat? I’m not sure what that would accomplish.

If you’re talking about removing chat completely from the show… Idk that’s kind of hard. I can see where you’re coming from, a lot of times chat can really screw the gang over with false snarfs and whatever. But a lot of people enjoy interacting with the chat. Conversely, I think Fraser and co. like interacting with the chat too. Sure they can get frustrated but I think if they removed them from the show they’d probably miss them.

I think the best you with the chat is enforce stricter punishment on false snarfs (like muted for an hour or the rest of the show) or remove the chat.

spidergliderdriver: had to play games on the background

I do that almost every time I watch them… do most of you just sit and watch the show by itself? I’d imagine that would make the quiet “filler” times pretty boring. Usually when the show is really on a roll I find myself neglecting the game I’m playing, but when there’s not much going on the game keeps me occupied. This is probably why I’m never disappointed watching them lol.

It really depends on when the show is and what they are playing. Some games I like to have undivided attention on, like a Saints Row 3, because crazy stuff tends to happen and I don’t want to blink and miss it. Conversely, something like Minecraft I feel has a lot of dead time in between interesting parts, so I usually am doing something else. Be it playing a game or chatting on (a different) IRC.

It also depends on when the show is. If it’s a late show like tonight, I am usually done chatting and all there really is to do is watch. I mean I could browse or game; but I’m often half-asleep by then.

EDIT: I just realized this post is pretty off topic at this point.

awhaleable, how about the chat gets removed, the mods are in the chat, the chat gets to speak and the mods get to listen, but Fraser only listens to a direct conversation with the mods?

I’m sure the mods could always pass neat and interesting stuff, such as “this dude was a juror”. In fact, I remember there are sometimes interesting stuff that Fraser doesn’t notice (hidden in the clutter of useless chat messages) that would get noticed this way (one of our members was an extra in Game of Thrones)

But hey, that’s my suggestion. Maybe its too hard for the mods, and if so, I understand, but the way I see it, the chat is only there by design, and it shouldn’t be.

Also, I most of the time tend to watch Video Games Awesome while I browse other stuff while listening, on shows that are really good they just have my undivided attention, and on shows that are fairly boring, I still watch them for completionist sake (and because even those shows always have some pieces of gold in them) while playing TF2 in the background or something

I think you’ve missed the idea here spidergliderdriver. Fraser has always said that the chat being in the show and interacting with them is part of what makes the show special. If you don’t like the chat that’s one thing, but if you think the chat doesn’t have any reason to be there I’d say your wrong. Some of the best running gags in the show where introduced by the chat.

Also I reiterate again, the chat is ONLY being problematic when it comes to being helpful in the game.

I don’t really think that there has been a decline in the quality of the show in recent times at all, but there are a few things I would like to say.

    awhaleable:
I think they should try to stick to games they actually want to play instead of games people ask for.

I would definitely agree with this. I find that I don’t want to watch a good few of their shows now just because I don’t like the game, and from what I can tell, a lot of them are games that the fans have asked for.

    crystalhawk:
Also can we retire the snarf derp system already?

I agree. It was a good idea to have a system which allowed people who had actually played the game or knew an answer to get that answer to the gang, or to allow guesses, but the chat ruined it. And I also never liked the use of the words snarf and derp in the system, they were perfectly acceptable and respectable words until this system was introduced.

    johnnyx1991:
I too get kinda turned off when they get seriously pissed off at videogames, because it feels kinda more like a review than 4 people having fun with a game, but I wouldn’t say that the show quality declined much. Just give it a few shows and everything will be better

This is also all very true.

    verrostet:
As a viewer, I don’t enjoy reading the chat – I usually watch VGA with a piece of paper covering that corner of my monitor.

I find that the chat is simply a distraction, and I almost never find it funny these days. Back when it wasn’t Turbo only, I never minded it, but now I often get so annoyed with it that I simply do not enjoy watching the show, and sometimes to the extent that I cover that part of the screen so that I’m not distracted by it.

I particularly hate when people come in to the chat and announce themselves and suddenly the whole chat is filled with people greeting that person. There’s nothing wrong with saying hello to someone, but it floods the chat and is pretty much unnecessary during the show, as the comments are supposed to be related to the game; and also when people in the chat repeat their jokes because no-one acknowledged them, most of these jokes weren’t even funny the first time.

I’m sorry if I offended anyone in the chat, but I think it has to be said.
I also don’t mean anything bad against anyone on the show, I really like the show, I love watching it, and I don’t think anything should be changed unless the people on the show think and agree that something should be changed.

It’s a great time to be alive, and a great time to be a VGA fan!

The Snarf/Derp system worked just fine when it was first introduced but since then, more and more people have been tuning in and the way that the system works isn’t really explained to the new guys all that often. This could possibly be dealt with by having one of the hosts (probably Becky, since she’s the one usually reading the chat) reminding the viewers how the Snarf/Derp system works at the start of each show or having the mods post reminders in the chat every now and then.

Can’t say I agree that the show has declined. Maybe some slight changes have happened but like with anything that’s only natural. I think what it really comes down to is the games they play. Some games are ripe with potential while others just fall flat. The only example I can bring up is the Dead Island episodes. The game just wasn’t suited for the show so it was just unpleasant to watch.

I wouldn’t attribute any sign of lack of enthusiasm to them being ‘forced’ to certain games though. If Fraser really didn’t want to play one game or another, he wouldn’t. Plus given the time of year new releases have slowed to a crawl so no doubt they’ll be scrounging for titles to play until September at least.

I agree with this point. I know that there’s already an ‘us vs them’ mentality re: the turbos vs everyone else even when say there’s not because lbr, it’s obvious that there is. Even within the turbos there is an internalised group where a select few all know each other quite well. For us turbos that aren’t in the chat as often, myself included, we feel like outsiders invading some exclusive club.

I’ve had this happen to me in other communities and it’s not good to feel like you’re missing out on things even though you’re apparently ~accepted~.

Some good things have been said here in this threat. I agree that the guys on the show should play more games they actually like and want to play than just cater to new releases, like Assassins Creed. Of course there are exceptions (like Asura’s Wrath, that playthrough was hilarious) but some of the best shows have been older games (Mario Party, Heavy Rain, Phoenix freaking Wright). I don’t think they would actually lose viewers if they put new releases a little bit more on the wayside.

Also, the chat has really gotten stupid as of late. I hope the Snarf/Derp system will be more relevant and enforced in the future. Its a pretty good system but we have gotten to the point where Turbo Chat is pretty much the same as Normal Chat was before the switch. The mods have to be more strict in order to clean up most of the useless snarf/lol comments. Of course, some trolling and false information can be hilarious but not all the time and not when the gang actually ask the chat for real help. I guess people also think that if they don’t use snarf, Fraser and the gang will never read their comments (in that case, Frasers interpretation of the chat is spot on).

I think maybe once or twice a month, the gang should do non-live shows along the lines of red dead, where they focus more on their own interactions rather than with the chat. I am a turbo and love the chat too don’t get me wrong, but there’s a certain dynamic in past videos that is sometimes missing these days, due to chat and its meta memes having become such a prevalent part of vga. Anyway, I still watch the show every night I get the chance, but that might be one suggestion to shake things up if it ever feels tedious to farshar.

I think that they are just in a transition phase in terms of the games they are playing at the moment. They will finish some of their long hauls and move onto games they may suit the shows layout more. The long hauls are most definetly not a bad thing, think back to heavy rain. They played that game through its entirety and it remains my favourite episode to date. I believe that the show feels as though it’s declined in quality because the current let’s plays arent as interesting anymore. I also think that the gang are pickIng up on this a little, maybe being the reason why they don’t seem so enthusiastic about the game. Maybe of they avoided the triple a games for a while in the future it could benefit the show. Someone said on one of the deadliest warrior episodes that they didn’t realise that the game got such shitty reviews because they were enjoying it so much. I think that this is what the show is about, the gang has to enjoy the game for us to enjoy the show. :)

That would be cool, a non-live heavily edited video once in a while would rule.

Yeah I wish people didn’t think that, Becky reads derps all the time. Hell I pretty much exclusively derp

I wouldn’t necessarily say the quality of the show has declined, but personally the attitude of Fraser as certainly changed over recent months :/
