This decision so far seems to have been received well. If anyone wants to TF2 and has me in their steam friends, feel free to join me in the pubs until this decision has inevitably been overturned.

While I don’t have an issue with randomly chosen teams I don’t think they’re very random at all, since only if both teams have the same amount of players already it is truly a random assignment, otherwise they’ll just be assigned to the team with less players. People do have differing setups (computers of different speeds and also differing internet connections) which often results in people getting into the server after a map change in a very similar order every time.

So in contrast to having a choice whether to join a certain team or just to be assigned randomly, I think having a choice actually makes the teams more likely to be mixed up differently in every game, because there will be people trying to decide which team to join, thus waiting and giving other player’s the option to choose first.

A much better approach to this problem would be to scramble teams right after the waiting period for new players has ended, that would ensure a much more random pattern of team assignments, but even then I’d prefer having a choice, especially if you plan to play a certain class. You may realize that one of the teams already has a lot of players that play the class you want to play and the other team doesn’t so obviously you would choose the team with a lack of your class.

Repus (I think it was him) also suggested at one point to use a plugin that puts on friendly fire at the beginning of a round and puts all players in red spawn, where you get to kill everyone and respawn with 300% life whenever you get killed. It isn’t really a fool-proof way to get even teams skill-wise but the classes are distributed more evenly, since the high damage output classes would be ranked high and thus would be distributed evenly amongst the two teams, the same stands true for classes that can’t deal a lot of damage in this phase. (The Pyro actually can deal very little damage in this phase since not all weapons work, the flamethrower doesn’t for instance)

Okay, a less angry and more logical opinion from me along with some devil’s advocate.

First, I really don’t like reading the excuse of “I chose this team because I’m more familiar with it.”, it’s not a valid point to be making in this debate, and also it shows that you’re not willing to challenge yourself with new situations. Can’t get around something as a Spy on the offense? Learn about what to do, and what not to do. You’re one of the best spies on the server, right? Why not prove it with a more difficult challenge?

My argument for the forced team join: I always pic random, and honestly when people stick to one team, things don’t feel right. With a random element like this new plug-in, things aren’t always the same, you have a new challenge in front of you that must be adapted to! This keeps people from playing favorites and prevents vet teams from totally annihilating new players who we’d like to see become vets themselves.

My argument AGAINST forced team join: I’m the last person to say this… but… we do have to let other people chose the teams they want to join, we want to play with our friends and not feel like we broke a rule by doing so. It got amazingly silly a while ago, but we gotta remind ourselves that sometimes a good number of people all want to be defending. If we don’t mix things up, these plug-ins may become mandatory. We also need to be able to chose the type of gameplay we start out with, I always chose random and defense/offense seem almost the same to me. This plug-in is already making a few of us feel like we broke a major rule and they’re considering leaving, we shouldn’t do this to ourselves.

My opinion: Please, drop the plug-in, and just tell others to be considerate when it comes to choosing teams. The random button is not going to kill you folks. Mix things up.

I’m only assuming this is directed at me. I know what to do as offensive spy, after almost 240 hours of spy, I can play offense or defense just fine, I just like starting out on defense plain and simple, nothing more to it. If you’re right now telling me I’m one of the best spies in the server, then I’ve already proven myself and shouldn’t have to any further to appease anybody.

I’ve seen a couple people referencing this whole vets vs noobs teamstacking thing happening on the server. Has this ever actually happened? I’ve never joined a game or been in a game where all the old turbos gang up together on red and gleefully roll the team of noobs. Also, since when are new turbos considered new at TF2? When I first joined the Turbo club and hopped on the turbo server, I had atleast a year of TF2 under my belt, and adapted well to playing on the Turbo server. Also, looking at it from another angle, I know several Turbos who are now considered gods at the game who never played TF2 before being a turbo. I’m just saying I think the term of noob or new player is relative and if this is the basis of the entire rebirth of the team stacking argument we need to rethink what the real problem is here.

Oh god, the drama. This is an experiment. It’s not permanent.

I like it. I always pick random so getting placed in the game instantly is great.

Scientist: Hmm, it seems this little experiment has made 85% of our test subjects panicky. I must make a note of this. :P

How long is this experiment going to last for?

For some reason i think we are arguing way past the problem, im with daverball here, that a team scrable before the first round begind would be the best idea, allso could we please please talk about the problem there is class balance on teams on the server sometimes, because i think that more of a problem now then some ppl sometimes join red team.

Edit: if you really want this problem to dissaper (and it most likely never will) its really most game down to what classes are on each team, i seen a team full for TF2 vets being steam rolled, because their team was not as well balance as the other team

Earlier today all four of us went medic and still won the match against a team that had heavy, engineer, and a few other classes. Sometimes it’s all about luck as well.

If I wanted it to be about luck with really bad odds I’d go gambling :/

Isn’t this proof that it isn’t about what classes people are playing and more about the skill level and coordination of the players on each team?

I really don’t see why it’s such a big deal to be forced onto a random team for every match. I do it all the time and it doesn’t affect my level of enjoyment at all. Really the only thing that does affect how much fun I have is when I’m on blue team and there are 2 people holding out to get on red team and my team is then at a disadvantage from being out-manned. I don’t care if I win or not but I do like to at least have an even match.

I’d also like to say to all the people that are saying they just want to start as offense or defense, you realize that by just getting what you want you are forcing another person to do the opposite right? Perhaps there are other people that would like to do the same but are choosing to wait their turn for that to happen rather than just forcing the issue like you are. A little consideration of the other players on the server is all that is being asked and those people that are constantly choosing to pick one side are not doing so at all.

If someone is capping sometimes there’s luck involved if you hit the guy or not. If it’s early in the game, that one shot could change the entire out come of the game..so the game has luck involved as well.
