Hey there Turbo Club members, Coms, regular Joes, mods, dudes and dudettes. I’m Aaron Fowkes and one thing that I love about the site is this community.

We have fan art, Youtube videos, podcasts and much much more in terms of contributions from fans, but there has never been anything that has touched on in terms of the core of the show. That, of course, is video games. So as a pet project in my spare time (and maybe even part time), I’m going to be developing a full Video Games AWESOME! adventure from the ground up in an episodic format. Minus the engine, everything will be made from scratch including sprites and backgrounds.

    Characters
The art style for the characters will be in a Scott Pilgrim vs The World 16-Bit-esque style with each character being able to change costume to some of Becky’s costumes at certain times in the game. Each main character will have around three different outfits. Who are the characters?

    Episode 1: Fraser
    Episode 2: Becky
    Episode 3: Kyle or Ben
    Episode 4: Kyle or Ben
    Episode 5: Deacon
    Episode 6: All together

At the end of each episode, each character will reach a certain central point with other characters joining them after their episode is beaten. After they’re all together in episode 6, you then have to work together to beat the game by switching characters at certain times and beating certain puzzles.

    The Game
Whilst the characters will likely be drawn on graphics tablets, the backgrounds will probably be mostly hand drawn and inked with some modifications on computer. The style is a point-and-click adventure game because I feel that it really would play well on the show. It’s going to be sort of a Scott Pilgrim meets Sam and Max in terms of humor. There will be nods and references, but they will start light at the beginning of episode one and will get stronger toward the end. Each episode will be around three to four hours and will probably take as long in months to create. Don’t hold me to it because this is a new engine I’m using for this (well, a new engine to me).

    Plot
A basic outline: Fraser wakes up on Christmas Day alone to join the chatroom in a solo playthrough of a game (a non-copyright Skyrim). After a glitch happens, Fraser is sucked into the Nintenzone and has to battle through non-copyright versions of video gaming culture in order to escape. Whilst on the way, he learns of someone thought long gone to be disrupting reality and drawing people in to play his games. Who could it be? Well, who do we know who’s evil, dudes and dudettes?

    Pricing and Release
As of right now, as no permission has been asked or given from Fraser (yet), the first episode is to be released to everyone on the forums free of charge. Are you a bad enough dude to be a T-T-TURBO CLUB member? You get access to early closed alphas and betas so you can report bugs and feedback.
The first episode will definitely be free, but in future it may turn out that this may be served as a demo for future episodes. If Video Games Awesome gets licensed out by Fraser (for a large fee. I’ll make sure he gets most of the money), then future episodes may be released for around a dollar. If it’s possible, it may be possible to jetstream the process of Turbos and early testing by releasing the game on Steam (as Steam supports automatic closed alphas and betas). It also acts as a great way to advertise the show and to patch the game as and when. If the game isn’t officially licensed by Nintendo Fraser, then the game may just be released as freeware on the forums for anyone who wants to have some fun with it.

I want to try and use my best confidence (!!!) to make this game the best it can possibly be and give VGA some good old fashioned justice. I want this to be good, so I will try to make this the very best that I can do for everyone. I won’t let you down!

Also, we may need some music or other additional artists in the future as we need different art styles. At the moment, I would need some chiptune-style music for the stages. Anyone who works on this game will get credit and, pending any licensing, they will also get a cut of the profits. They will at least get their name in lights.

I really want to get the show the good attention that it deserves from the gaming community, and I also want to make something fun for the guys to play through on the show. I may be able to release some short little gameplay videos in the near future (no standalone demos yet) to give you guys some feedback into where I’m going with this. Most importantly is that I want to get some feedback from the community over what works and what doesn’t. I want the community to help bring the very best out of this game. It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be a challenge, it’s going to take a lot of coffee (especially because I don’t like coffee) and it’s going to take time. However, I’m sure that we can have a lot of fun with this. Thanks everybody for reading this far, and I hope to see you around. Any further details that people want to know about, feel free to Reply or send me a message.

    Thanks!

All I think I could help with is music and story. I might also make some sounds using as3sfxr or I can make my own custom sound effects.

If those are your strengths, then that would be awesome. Could you throw together some music? I’m looking for, mostly, chiptunes (similar to Starship Amazing) or maybe some little mixes of old AVG music. That would really be awesome.

You should see what the mods think of the idea in the meantime. I’ll try to compose something.

I want to see what everyone thinks first. I’ve even sent this thread to Becky and Ben to see if they have any opinions and to see if it would mean that Fraser could see it too because he is one difficult guy to get a hold of (understandable though. He is busy and has a lot to do :) ). Thanks.

I would love to help make this game a reality, i’m pretty good at designing sprites and i can make some really cool backgrounds, depending on what graphical style they are based on. Also is this game going to have Fraser exploring different video games that appeared on VGA?
I could also help design the story, since i constantly think of new ideas, i was thinking we could even have a court scene scenario like Pheonix Wright, and instead of Pheonix its Frasher…

Also, have you thought about maybe starting a Kickstarter about this?

That is literally the exact thing that I was going for (except for it being non-copyright, so there will be a courtroom but Edgeworth, for example. won’t look exactly like Edgeworth). I would love to see some sprites. It’s Scott Pilgrim style, so slightly bigger heads than bodies etc. Think you could throw a Frash-Frash together? Side view? :)

I have thought about it, but this will use Awesome Video Games and Video Games Awesome intellectual property, so I would need permission from Fraser before something like this could take place on Kickstarter. All proceeds would go toward artists and composers (and a distribution license for the engine if the very low priced commercial option takes hold). This could be interesting and could result in a better product, but this relies on approval from FFSTV before this could happen.

What kind of music are you looking for?

    EDIT:

Just saw that you needed chiptunes and stuff. I make kind of a retro style electronic music in the same vein as chiptune but it’s a bit different.

Here’s an example of the music I make. This is the new podcast intro for The Crouch Room if you haven’t heard it already:

And here’s a Turbo Tribute. It has kind of a Starship Amazing feel to it:

I’ve been kind of dreaming of this project for a while now but as I lack the basic technical knowledge, the best I could do is jot down an idea here and there for example if the game had a battle system, what kind of moves each character could use and stuff like that.

As I’ve said I can’t offer any help with actually making the game but I’d love to see if I can contribute to some of the writing and I’ll happily be a tester as the game comes along.
