Inspired by the “Fear Quit” thread, since I’ve never stopped playing a game because I’m scared but I’ve still been scared like hell over video games. Anyone ever been so startled by something in a game that you threw the controller at the screen or have been too paranoid to close that open window just in case something’s out there to grab you? I have.
The worst I’ve ever been scared of a game was a moment from Fatal Frame 3. Early on there’s a point where you have to look through a peephole to snap a picture of a girl pinning a doll to the wall. On the playthrough, nothing happens. On a second playthrough, however, another girl will jump up right into the camera and stare at you for a moment. I had no idea this was going to happen so when I took the picture and heard some creepy little girl say “Who’s there?” I thought it was just the first girl. So the game shows me my photo, cool, fade out and HOLY SHIT GHOST GIRL STARING DIRECTLY INTO MY SOUL AAHHH! I tried to chuck the controller at the screen, threw it too hard so it hit the floor instead, then ran out of the room shrieking and cursing more times than I ever have before, and also made the dog freak out and start barking. I’m just glad no one else was home to laugh at me XD
July 24, 2012 at 1:59 pm #44804The first Silent Hill on PS1 always scared the jebus out of me when I was a kid. I can still remember some things from it, eventho I haven’t played it in over a decade. The opening sequence with the little girl, the creepy school and the bloody piano first come to mind.
After that… I haven’t really played that many scary games. The most recent one would probably be Minecraft when I played it for the very first time (singleplayer). I don’t know why, but it had a very big impact on me, I always got so tense during night, and the smallest thing would make me jump, I loved it. Definitely one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had in recent years, too bad that feeling doesn’t stay forever.
July 24, 2012 at 2:55 pm #44813I don’t play scary games, but I was playing Killing Floor having a good time with my buds on skype. We were joking around and such so I was completly relaxed. I was playing Demo (a class that gets sluaghtered up close) I hear the Patriach near and tell everyone to get ready to shoot him when he comes through the hallway, then… He appears right infront of me and murders me, I was so terrified I actually screamed at the game for the first time in terror =(
July 24, 2012 at 4:52 pm #44832When I was little I remember two things that were pretty scary.
The guy saying RESIDENT EVIL 2 when my dad played it.
The butcher dude in diablo, when my dad played it. AHHH FRESH MEAT
July 27, 2012 at 12:20 am #45127The drug trip parts in Max Payne scared me as a kid (I was about 8 years old). Not in the traditional sense mind you. It chilled me to the bone.
The baby never stops crying… it only gets louder…
To this day I can’t hear the sound of a screaming baby without getting a twinge.
July 27, 2012 at 9:11 pm #45288This is was the most recent and only scare that I remember. I don’t know if this count or not, but when I was watching CaptainSparklez play Slender, I genuinely got scared during the bathroom part. It was the first time I actually heard myself scream like that.
July 31, 2012 at 6:15 am #45765Would Garrysmod count? I was playing on a moody serious roleplaying zombie server with a friend, until the ambient sounds started getting more and more intense, props started moving closer when I wasn’t looking, and it went on until the point where props were trying to murder me and I was being kicked around. I was pretty terrified at that point. Then, that damn scary girl from fatal frame just yelled and an image appeared on the screen and I just screamed, slowly tried to fight my fear I closed the game but it proved difficult ’cause I was shaking so much. After that I felt embarrassed ’cause mom was just in the other room. Turned out later it was a custom plugin exclusive to that server.
July 31, 2012 at 7:52 am #45777Can’t usually play scary games I get way too jumpy irl and usually lasts few hours. Same with horror movies, I can’t stand jump scares, they get me almost always.
August 4, 2012 at 5:43 pm #46467I’m surprised no one has mentioned the silent realms from Skyward Sword yet. Jeez, my heart was racing and I was sweating through every one of those, especially when the guardians were awake D:

It was one of the N64 classics I grew up with, and looking back, it’s had an enormous impact on my psychology and my ideas of atmosphere and fear. Today it’s my favorite game, but when I was six or seven, it scared the shit out of me.
There are so many parts of this game that made me whimper in terror (the antagonist, every single boss, constantly running out of time before inevitable doom), but if I had to narrow it down to one scare that shocked me the most, it’s the one in the Music Box House.

Perhaps what unsettled me most is that the music doesn’t change right away; the door just snaps open and the camera zooms in on him.
Needless to say, I avoided the Music Box House for a long time after that.
