Pro-tip:  Use Lava buckets instead of Charcoal. It uses less resources and a single bucket of lava does 100 blocks. Buckets are also not used up thanks to past patch.
No nearby lava? Go to Nether!

I just ask that we do roll-back to prior to the update to 1.4 if we are gonna keep 1.4.

This is incorrect in at least that other mobs can kill each other and drop loot.

What is the stance of modifying certain unique server structures, such as Strongholds, Jungle Temples and Desert Temples?
