What are you basing your “most people” on? By all financial measures, Nintendo is still turning a profit. If “most people” felt the way you purport they do, then Nintendo wouldn’t be turning a profit. By comparison, Sony posted its first profit in 5 years only after liquidating more than $2 billion in assets.

Competing for the “hardcore” crowd hasn’t been Nintendo’s strategy since around 2003. This is nothing new, nor, would I say, alarming or inherently bad (see their success with the Wii). Nintendo has a current ratio over 6:1; it isn’t in anywhere near the financial trouble Sega, for example, was in with the Dreamcast. This is just another minor…[Read more]

ramrodwilly replied to the topic Dinosaurs are the best things ever. So why are there so few Dino-centric games? in the forum Video Gaming! 1 week, 5 days ago
Dinosaurs don’t seem to be as popular in Japan as in the West (source). Interestingly, popularity seems to pick up during periods that coincide with Monster Hunter releases, but that may just be a coincidence.
You’d have to ask someone who lives there (like Euske) to verify. If I had to guess though, I’d say the reasons are similar to why…[Read more]

Of course it’s a Kickstarter. Silicon Knights is pretty much bankrupt after its unethical and illegal shenanigans. Dyack is a disgrace to the industry.

Video games have been vilified for over 20 years now. Mature discussion has done very little or nothing to sway the majority of influential people (read: parents, media, pundits, legislators, law enforcement, medical professionals), whom the masses prefer to believe without question. If anyone is sticking their heads in the sand, it is they, the…[Read more]

Nintendo restructured their Creative Department in 2004 shortly after Iwata took over in 2002 (Yamauchi retired in 2002, left the company altogether in 2005). Miyamoto serves as one of the general managers overseeing the entire Entertainment Analysis and Development department, so the people overseeing the various groups will take lead on the…[Read more]

Well, one major difference:
Did you even know who Kimishima was before today? Iwata by comparison will likely be much more public.
As a project and engineering manager, if I had to guess as to why those games didn’t make it over before public outcry, then I would say the preliminary data didn’t back up releasing them. Very rarely do business…[Read more]

Another observation:
The hour or whatever spent giving a presentation that can’t possibly always appeal to everybody is an hour or whatever of hands-on experience lost for the attendees. (It’s also an hour or whatever lost of valuable consumer feedback for any last-minute changes before release.)

It’s just a restructuring of the company in preparation for the wave of retirements (Miyamoto hinted at it in March). The person Iwata is replacing, Tatsumi Kimishima, is retiring soon. Expect more retirements and restructuring in the next decade or so:
Tatsumi Kimishima - 63
Shigeru Miyamoto – 60
Takao Sawano – at least 59
Tadashi Sugiyama…[Read more] -

You can jump it with Pegasus Boots and Roc’s Feather (and a little luck). They fixed it in the DX version by widening the water.

The same could happen in the 4th dungeon… Angler’s Tunnel I think? The waterfall one. There was a spot where you could jump over deep water when you weren’t supposed to and unlock a door, but if you unlocked the […]

That was odd to me too… unless, for whatever reason, they decided to abbreviate “x86-64″ as “x86″ (which flies in the face of the common abbreviations “x64″ for “x86-64″ and “x86″ for “x86-32″)
